I figured mines well get it done I only have 5k miles of warrranty left ( 2008 6 Speed E90 ).

The good news is that you still have the warranty for the lifter noise from this repair. If by chance that did not solve the problem, you still have the service warranty they did for this problem, which will carry over from the work they did.

I have read and read this entire thread! Looking for a few opinions so I made a short video. I have a distinct tick toward the front of the engine cover. It seems to be most prominent on the oil filter side. I am completely aware of the DI noise but i am concerned that what i may be hearing is of something other. I have an appointment at the local dealership but it’s not for another week and wanted to get a few opinions. It is only heard during cold starts, but tends to get louder after idling for a few minutes only to go away after i drive the short distance home from work. Any thoughts would be appreciated. You can hear the slower paced tick over the DI noise.

Been reading these posts as i picked up a 07 328xi a few months back. I notice a metal rattle of sorts only on start up usually on cold days, it lasts for maybe 2-3 seconds and goes away. I have no noticeable valve train noise or ticking during running, so im wondering if my symptoms are similar to others?
Also it seems as if going to the dealer is a hit or miss to rectify this problem? I still have a valid aftermarket warranty, so im wondering if its worth pursuing.. |

When I first got my car it sounded like an obvious lifter noise similar to one I had with a 69 Ford. I eliminated it in my Ford by adjusting the valves (myself) so I understood the problem. But repeated reassurances on this and other forums caused me to decide to ignore it. It seems worse some days than others , but bothers me most when the car is in the garage when it sounds so loud. In the worst case it can cause serious premature wear and this was addressed by the TSB. Unfortunately I failed to follow up before my factory warranty expired. It hasn't gotten worse, but I fear it will shorten the life of the involved engine parts.

Well so i am back again with the same problem..I noticed it this morning when the Car was parked outside for the night and the Temp. barely touched 40. I was on my way to work and People were looking like i was driving a Tractor...I had the same problem last year during winter and the BMW showroom replaced some parts specifically EXHAUST CAMSHAFT HVA LIFTERS I wonder if the only solution is go to a warm place like Florida or Texas...:-(

Well I just got the dreaded news that I have "The Tick" and the dealer quoted me $2134 for new lifters. I about puked. Hope the car will run for another 100k without getting new lifters because there is no way in hell I can come up with $2134 for the repair.
Has anyone replaced lifters on their own? For anyone who got the new lifters can someone list the part numbers that were replaced??

The only thing is that the gentleman that called me back stated that there is some wear present. Maybe that is normal, but concerned me non the less.

Here is the parts list that was supplied to me from the dealer to fix my lifters:
2006 BMW Lifter Prts List Part Number Part Description Quantity Part Price 11-12-7-535-024 TORX BOLT x15 $15.00 11-12-7-581-215 PROFILE-GASKET x1 $25.02 11-12-0-409-288 SET OF ALU. SCREWS x1 $27.08 11-36-7-524-954 COLLAR SCREW x2 $5.80 11-33-7-605-330 ALIGNMENT ELEMENT x12 $115.44 11-33-7-631-589 ROLLER DRAG LEVER x12 $137.88 NOTE: The prices are based on what Tisher sells them for. Also I could not find part # 11-33-7-631-589. UPDATE: Heard back from my dealer. The 11-33-7-631-589 is an updated part that apparently fixes the lifter tick. Only problem is I can not find it for purchase from outside my dealer. RealOEM does not have the part listed.

Hopefully this is will help everyone in the same shoes.
I have Sedan E90 2008 and a week prior to my warranty expired as others suggested in this thread, I took it to the dealership and they fixed it without any questions. So far the car is running well without any ticking. Knock on wood! All I did was showing the video to my SA that I took with my iPhone that shows the ticking noise, a reference to this thread on the email and also the TSB number. I'm not sure if they replaced the lifters or the head or both. I can go back check the receipt and update you guys if someone needs it. Lastly, I want to say thank you for everyone that's contributing to this thread. It was very helpful to get it fixed (in my case). Good day! |

It really upsets me that us out of warranty guys are just plain out of luck. You would think BMW would want to make things right. I know I will heavily consider getting a BMW again knowing what I know now.
UPDATE: Dealer just called me. He stated he talked with BMW NA and they are willing to cover half the cost of the original $2134 for the new lifters. In talking with the SA I asked why part 11-33-7-631-589 can't be found anywhere. He stated that it is the latest fix for the lifter tick and actually replaces the cylinder head solution. Hope this helps folks.

The dealer couldn't replicate the problem..well that was expected...He did say if i hear the sound again record it with the mileage and VIN number so he can have it as proof..I am also thinking of getting extended warranty worth about 3k for 3 extra years..My car has only about 21k miles and its 2009 make.so i guess its worth considering i want to keep it for as long as i can...Anyways will update the thread once i go to the dealer..

I just had my lifters replaced today, no questions asked. I heard the tick at it's worst last week and took video of it. I called to make an appointment and said I had the lifter issue and the SA took me at my word and didn't ask for any proof. I've only heard it a few times (at least I thought) but my CPO is running out so that was my cue to get it fixed. After the fix the engine is very quiet, even noise I thought was normal isn't present anymore. I hope this is a permanent fix and best of luck to any of you that are out of warranty that have this issue.

However, this thread deals with the design flaw of the N52 from 2006 to 2009ish pending on the build date. Click my u2b sig., and the design flaw will be noted as something that is wrong, and just not normal noise. iDriveanXi, good luck going forward.
