The camera has built-in motion detection, face detection, intrusion detection and line crossing detection.

That being said, my NVR software does all that for me so I currently don't take advantage of in-camera intelligence.

I went back through all the cameras to check how I set them up. I see now that only two of the outdoor cameras are 1080p, the ones that are not as important. The rest were left at 3MP.

There are 18 cameras that are recording 24/7 with 6 month retention, I try to save as much disk space as I can.

That makes sense. When running that many cameras, and having a six-month retention policy, then recording in 6MP would require quite a bit of disk space...

The retention is most likely overkill. That being said, I walked out this morning and someone at the neighbors house was being arrested... We just moved in a few months ago, haven't met those neighbors yet.

I do wish that I went with ptz on a couple of them. They are placed near the roof and I get freaked out messing with them while on that tall of a ladder. I have one that should be turned more to the right but have been procrastinating to go up there and reposition it.

Trust me. I installed the easy ones. But the ones that required serious ladders, I had my AV guys do those.

They physically nstalled them, but I didn't want them touching the network and software, so I had to get up there to reposition them.

Any recommendations for wireless indoor cameras? The hikvision cubes are starting to get flaky, they have also been dropped a few times.

Is foscam or equivalent still that bad?

I was going to say the Hikvision cubes, but it sounds like those aren't working for you. Any reason why you can't wire them and power them via PoE since you need a power cable in any regard?

I don't have anything in mind off hand. Having a conduit and running the cabling inside isn't an option?

I have a spare drop by my deck, and want to extend it to my patio. I think I'll probably need 150 or so feet of cat6 to make the run. I was hoping I can just throw down some direct burial instead of having to get out the conduit and start digging.

Would something such as this work? It's a bit pricey but you're pretty much guaranteed there wouldn't be any problems.

I linked the one I did because I felt having an armoured outer jacket would be something good to have to prevent accidental splicing of the cable if digging was done around it. And also to prevent critters from chewing on the cable where it's exposed.

Home Security Camera Systems

So I've been having some trouble with people driving on my yard and was looking at some of the home security camera systems. I can't get a good read on whether this brand or that brand is good.

So I figured one of you guys might have some insight into this.

I want something that I can monitor the front and sides of the house for now. I think x4 90degree POV cameras will do.

MDX, POE, IP, wireless, wired....my head is spinning.

A friend of mine and I install home security camera systems as a side gig. We basically install whatever the customer wants, but we do more POE than anything. We tell our customers to get their camera system from amazon or Sam's club and we do everything else. We have installed a lot of these systems.

https://www.amazon.com/Swann-Camera-...gateway&sr=8-3

Easy install and we have yet to have any technical issues. You can get a cheaper version without 2-way audio. There is also an app to where you can watch a live feed on your smart phone or tablet as long as you have a data connection.

Not that I need to tell you, but just a suggestion; carefully plan what you intend to capture when considering location/POV of the cameras. If your intent is to capture the license plates, you may never get a solid capture of numbers/letters based off a moving vehicle, depends on the speed they are traveling. Shop around, find a system that meets your budget, with the number of cameras that you need, and if you have any questions (on the system or installation), pm me.

I had a Lorex POE system installed earlier this year and it works great with a great app. 8.5mp cams in 4K UHD are crystal clear. They have great night capabilities too in full color as long as thete is ambient lighting available. Good luck

Sub'd

I have an existing 2-camera system that has pretty good placement in terms of coverage, but the clarity isn't there. Since I already invested to have someone pull wiring, I'm pretty much stuck with the BNC/power options, although I've recently seen that there are still a ton of those with greatly improved camera optics. Just haven't pulled the trigger on replacement cameras/DVR. I don't need audio.

The existing system, I KNOW that fauqer when I see him walk up his driveway across the street, after parking another vehicle he is repairing on the street. But no plates. I can't even legitimately read the door panel on the tow truck that drops the vehicle. And I've seen there are newer systems where I could block the trees moving in the wind from activating recording.

I'm not interested in monitoring from my phone, just when I get home.

Recently had perfect video evidence of this yahoo who was working across the street. Went to park, backed up and pulled my mailbox down the side of the truck. He got out, looked at it, and the mailbox stayed on the post so he just went about his business. The mailbox was only held in place by a few threads and gravity when I got home. Submitted the video to the water company (who hired him to do repairs) and they paid for the materials I used to replace the post.

Nest cams for us (4x outdoor, 4x indoor). + nest doorbell and nest locks. All play nicely together and incredibly easy to install and setup.
