If people know how to copy list and edit in their own location and AC usage, it is doable. Please don't just respond with those two as this would be a big mess in the thread. |

So, I've read through a few different threads about this particular issue. I think I may be suffering from this failure as well. What happened to me: Started the car up and started backing out of the driveway. Before getting out I lose power steering, smell burning rubber and the battery light illuminates on the dash. The system says battery isn't receiving a charge from the alternator. I pull back in and park it. After some searching and reading, I check under the hood. With the car running and AC off, everything seems okay with the ever-so-slight smell of rubber. No lights on the dash, power steering functioning. Car still running I turn on the AC, I watch as everything slows to a stop and the burning rubber smell returns. From what I could see, the center of what I'm pretty sure is the crankshaft pulley was still spinning while everything else had come to a halt.
Here's the questions I have now. Is this something I can replace with normal tools? Other than the pulley, drive belt and AC belt, is there anything else I should replace while doing this job? I've found parts at https://www.eeuroparts.com/ Conti belts and Vaico pulley for a total of $218.72. Is it worth waiting for the Fluidampr group buy to actually materialize? Also, I just clicked past 114k mi. Bought it a few weeks ago, and this drops into my lap. That's Murphy for ya, huh? Last edited by GgOTi; 02-10-2017 at 10:42 PM.. |

I recommend replacing the four mounting bolts. See my post #214. I took the parts to my local indy shop and paid them for two hours' labor.

Replace both of the belts at the same time. Also, if your thermostat is old or is failing, good time to replace while you are there and there are no belts or damper in the way of spilled coolant.

Its that time of the year again apparently. Running A/C may or may not have to do with increased failures. I picked up another failure on a new thread and adding it in here. I gave the guy this thread to try to keep conversation in this one thread (there are 2 other sort of popular ones too).

You can replace this with normal tools. Took me about 3 hours to do it total, you can rent a torque wrench and the belt stretching tool from autozone if you dont have them. Other than that it's just normal hand tools.

Reordering list as Torqu3 put himself at top of list. Moving him to the bottom like i do all other new additions. Wow. We have a total of 30 broken HBs.

Replaced mine at 154,800miles for a 2011 (2010 build). Mostly highway, A.C. on pretty much the entire time and also spirited driving on backroads a decent bit (really engages the PS pump). The pulley didn't get destroyed, but it showed extensive wear and the rubber was cracked/warped.

damper rebulder
http://damperdoctor.com/
REBUILT HARMONIC BALANCERS Rebuilt harmonic balancers have a refundable core value. All rebuilt harmonic balancers are first disassembled and cleaned. The parts are then inspected for defects, including stripped bolt holes and worn or cracked keyways and hubs. Harmonic balancers are then prepared for assembly. Timing marks are set to the factory specification by using a laser aligning process. After the timing marks are set, the harmonic balancers are then injected with a high-temperature, high-strength silicone rubber that is then platinum cured for a extremely strong hold. The new silicone rubber is capable of withstanding temperature in excess of 450 degrees, and will hold up against pressures as high as 770 psi. Rebuilt harmonic balancers carry a 3 year limited warranty Damper Doctor is the source for new and rebuilt harmonic balancers. We stock thousands of dampers for domestic and import vehicles. Even if we don't have the right harmonic balancer in stock for your vehicle, we offer a custom rebuilding service of your worn out damper. Damper Doctor also offers rebuilding services for motor mounts and drive shaft supports. |

Ive got a bad swaybar bushing that ONLY makes noise when its warm.....all winter long, not a peep, but as of last month it cries every tiny bump I touch... Theres without question a correlation for that rubber/urethane...I would be willing to bet there is one for the HB as well. Could also be a combo of the two as well... |

Omaha, I would think cold would squeak more and hot would be mushy and quiet. Not arguing that you are hearing noise now but it is counterintuitive.

You might think it is, but when its cold the rubber is hard and isnt "grabby" its more like... a urethane bushing.....much less friction.... but just the opposite when its warm.

I'm at 93K and recently asked the dealer to inspect the damper when it was in for service (bad temp sensor in DEF tank). They indicated it was fine (and I am hoping they did not say that just because it still was under extended warranty). |

How many of these failures on the X5 M57?
I was thinking maybe we are blaming the wrong part, with the issues the 335d had with the A/C belt squealing, maybe it is a function of a defective A/C compressor, or the compressor is over sized? Just a thought.. |

Belt squeal is because the original belt is a tad too long and will slip. That's why they put out a Service Bulletin that calls for a belt that is 6mm shorter.
