Most of the big name frames are produced by one of a few large frame manufacturers such as luxotica and safilo. Some designers choose to not license their stuff and produce their own lines. Companies like Maui Jim pride themselves their lens quality. Most of the large manufactures also have a corresponding lens company which makes their own lenses.

A friend works for Essilor; He doesn't know the exact percentage of lenses that their companies produce (it's a lot), but everytime we talk about eyeglasses or sunglasses he laughs pretty hard about how much they are marked up (it's more than 60%). Generally, the lenses cost literally a few dollars to make.

and yes I'm aware that there are companies that produce their own lenses (part of the reason why I buy Maui Jim).

Yeah, essilor is one of the biggest lens manufactures out there. They make many of their own lens and lens products. Generally the lenses are cheap the make, and the larger the business the cheaper they are. You can also edge lenses at your own office. Through internships and whatnot I've been at places that marked up their sunglasses anywhere from 150 -300 %. You can buy lens blanks for a few dollars a piece and edge them in your office and charge the same $150 it would cost to send them out to a lab. The money you make up is profit and for paying for the 15-40k edging machine.

Also essilor doesn't produce frames. And with most sunglasses you are paying for the name and not the quality of the lens. Oakley and Maui Jim make some of the highest quality lenses on the market when it comes to sunglasses.

Also, unless your talking about transitions, essilor is generally more in the business of making lenses for regular glasses.

Their basically the same but instead of the nylon theyre made of titanium, a little thinner frame and dont have hinges.

never had prescription sunglasses before. i'm thinking about getting prescription maui jims. i got a pair of sugar beach (pretty much looks like lighthouse), and i love them.. super light weight, just feels a little too fragile sometimes. been meaning to get another pair of maui jims ever since airport destroyed my other pair.

I personally like the ray ban styles and their priced right, they just dont work for me. Most other aviators do.
