Was at the dealer today buying coolant. $80 for 4.5 litres.
I was curious about how much they charge for oil. Told me $20 per litre so $130 to get required 6.5 litres. This is in NZ btw. You guys in the US are so lucky |

most dealer charge $79+ tax for an oil change if you have a time price is fair. In walmart mobil 1 0W40 jugs are $23.xx I use K&N oil filter which is $14 so if you are handy 2 oil changes will cost you little less then $80.. I am an oil freak and change it every 3400-3500 miles..

Just bought 3 cases of BMW's new Shell-sourced oil for $6.30 per Liter. Funny thing was the first case I opened had an already-opened bottle that was leaking. This from a brand new BMW case of oil in the box that had not been previously opened. Quite strange.... The mysterious opened Liter is destined for the lawn mower - LOL.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

I have a dealership near my work that uses the TradeMotion BMW parts source and I have no shipping costs, just sales tax. It is BMW of Sterling (Virginia)

Does anyone know if using Mobil 1 0w40 in Southern California (or any hot climate) is ok to use? I plan to have the oil changed at around 3-5k miles from now if I move forward with this today.
Thanks

The thing is, human nature. You need a rebate code to get your $20. Guess what? 4 had codes that were previously entered, 2 had dirty oil inside!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's why I'm glad the M1 has foil seals. Human nature is pretty clever, huh? |

The 40 in the 0W40 number means that at high temps the oil's viscosity "behaves" like a 40 wt oil.

Thanks!
So what is the significance of it behaving like a 40wt oil? Thanks.

I have a basic question. My oil change light came up recently. I only put 3,000 miles upon purchasing the car. Is it okay to change the oil at the mileage point and Not the time? I have an N55. Any opinion helps

Anybody ever run liquimoly? I've been eyeing it for some time. I've never heard of it, but my local NAPA told me it's used everywhere in Europe

Hey guys... went out looking for oil to do an oil change... was going to grab some Mobile 1 but noted that it is no longer LL-1...
Went to the Mobile 1 site to check and got this: 2006, BMW 330i "Based on what you've told us, your vehicle manufacturer recommends 7 quarts of a 5W-30 or 5W-40 viscosity and oil that meets BMW Longlife LL-01. We currently do not offer any motor oils in the United States that meet these specifications." |

I recently took off my valve cover and cleaned it out, if it's any indication it was pretty damn spotless after 160,000 km. Not sure if that can be attributed purely to the oil I use, but I was surprised as to how free of gunk and build up the valve cover was having never been removed. I also don't lose oil over time, it always stays at the same level. Last edited by the dope steez; 07-20-2016 at 01:14 PM.. |
