Sure that you don't mean head? That's what they did with mine. Not that it stopped the noise. |

Thanks!
I'm new to the forum but found this thread and I'm glad I did. I've had the same issue on my 2009 328i and they told me its normal but I think next time I go into the dealer i'll have them recheck it. Just to be sure. The sound is more like metal to metal ticking. Thanks for all your updates. It was a big help!!

I had the same issue with the occasional ticking on start up especially if I let the car idle before driving off, switched to castrol 0w30 german formula got little better but persisted. Took it in to dealer showed them a video and confirmed on the spot that lifters need replacing. So far so good,no ticking.

When I picked up the car from having its lifters replaced, I noticed immediately that it didn't help. I didn't say anything because I figured they'd just tell me they had to break in or something, but after about 3 months I called them up again to have them apply the "real" fix. However, as I mentioned earlier, mine still ticks a bit. Oh well.

2007 335I here..
Mine ticks too , I noticed the noise its located more towards the front of the engine? only way to make it go away is rolling in gear downhill, or up to a red light, then it goes away completely, soon as I touch the clutch or gaspedal its back. Is that injectors or lifters ticking? Last edited by Nordic335M3; 10-29-2014 at 01:27 PM.. Reason: spelling |

My old 323 did that and I realized it was just the cat contracting from the sudden loss of heat. Someone asked me if I drove hard and in fact I didn't because he could also hear the ticking noise.

2009 328xi. I live in Canada. Had occasional ticking on start up, especially in very cold or humid weather. Ticking goes away once engine is warmed up and you drive off. Tried some oil additive but that didn't work either. For last 3 months (summer) I used high octane 94 (esso here in Canada has it) gas and the ticking has gone away. Once it gets really cold, if the ticking returns I'll put in 89 (mid level) octane and call it a failed experiment.

How loud is this ticking noise before its actually considered to be a problem? I can hear it on my 2008 328xi if I have my windows down but not otherwise.

can noone shed some light on how to find out what is making the ticking?..injector or valvelifter?...
is it possible to disconnect the injectors one at the time?... |

It's the lifters. The injectors are noisy for sure - but the noise they make is constant and pretty faint. Nothing like the metalic clicking / ticking you can hear on the links in this thread. The sound is there mostly because on start up there isn't sufficient oil pressure in the head to "pump" up the lifters. When the lifters are receiving full oil pressure the ticking dissipates.

I went out to start the car early this morning and went back in. When I was heading back out, outside my front door I heard a pretty loud ticking noise. I had ticking before but this one sounded louder and this time I was like 25 feet from the the engine.
Not sure what it is but going to check it again today to see if it's still ticking. How much does changing the lifts and camshafts usually cost? Hope no more than 2k? |

Started the car this evening and couldn't hear the ticking. Like others have said its intermittent and maybe just because of the temps or something.
As for the camshafts I just skimmed through a few pages and saw someone post the parts and camshafts was were replaced also. Didn't really go through the whole thread yet |

Mine does not get less noisy as the oil heat up.. it stays the same.. and located in the front of the engine..
only time it goes away is when im rolling in gear, not touching the clutch or gas pedal.. |
