Overall I am good with an AT car, but sport package at minimum is neessary for me. Ideally, I'd like a Msport car, but that maybe too far out of reach. Anybody have any more e91 leads in cali (norcal pref). Thanks! |

A pair of clean no-broken-tabs xenon LCI lights is ehhhhhh 900?
Going from halogen fixed lights to adaptive xenons requires some coding and also wiring and level sensors etc. Sport package vs non-sport on an xi is just seats and a steering wheel. In RWD it is a different suspension too, so it has more meaning. M-sport is a fully different body kit and a bunch of interior mods too. Last edited by vilord; 12-29-2019 at 10:04 PM.. |

Headlight retrofit is somewhat documented but costs around a grand. I needed new housings, wiring and a new frm when I retrofitted my e82. N52’s are pretty reliable. Most develop valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, and oil pan gasket seepage. Coil packs fail, and water pump/tstats are hit or miss on this generation. Maintenance on the car you buy is key. My higher miler already had all of the weak points addressed. Outside of fluids, I had to put in a new battery, and my power steering line has a leak that needs to be addressed. Suspension is showing its age and there are random cosmetic issues that could be addressed. |

I want a RWD, so the sport package is a must for me. This car generally has all the options I want except for the Xenon (this is pretty darn important for me). I'm ok with black on black, but would prefer a blue/white exterior color. Do you guys think by 110k miles the shocks are gone anyways? I'm trying to figure out if I should just get a nonsport car and swap in sport seats/wheels/get new suspension because its worn anyways.
Also trying to figure out how much in maintenance (stuff you guys have mentioned) i'll be spending given the mileage for this black one. |

Yes by 110k the shocks are done. They'd be losing effectiveness at 60k, by 80 you'd be able to tell the difference between them and new, and by 100 or 120, they're beat.
The rest of the suspension will also be starting to loosen up. |

Adding xenons isn't hard and as mentioned is well documented. If your example is newer than 03/07 build, it may not need a new FRM either... But would have to test.
These days a supported frm isn't expensive either. Last edited by vilord; 12-30-2019 at 01:21 AM.. |

Another point to think about, as others have mentioned, is where the car is from. If in a salt/rust belt area, those bolts will most likely be seized and a B* to get off! Do yourself a favor and get something in a rust-free area. I went through this recently myself and it was a pain! The cost can add up quick, but it is well worth it to refresh the suspension at that point.

Prior to that purchase I went 2 hours north to test drive a '10 e91 RWD with MT, sport and 90k miles. According to the computer it had 5k miles left on front and rear brake pads, and needed oil and brake fluid changes immediately. Tires were bald and all wheels had rash. Lower grill was a mess from running up against parking blocks. Worse was the mildew smell - current owner said previous owner left the sunroof open during a storm, so stains were evident on the ceiling. Car drove really well. He was asking $18.5k and had people from all over the country calling him. I could see myself replacing headliner and carpets but still chasing that smell. Add in known service items and some gasket work and I would not have been that far from the MT m-sport that EAG had for sale at that time. hope that helps |

As an addendum to my prior comment(s), one fact some buyers of E91s might find is that there are many of us who DIY the majority of repairs at a small fraction of what a dealer or indy would (has to, to stay in business) charge.
That creates a situation where one buyer who depends on outside entities for most repairs has a much different outlook versus a DIY buyer. Care in point: this E91 we bought four years ago -- if we took this someplace to fix all the stuff we've done ourselves, I'm guessing we would have spent close to what we paid for the car ($10k). Shortly after buying the car I realized why the prior owner likely sold it -- three "repairs" that would have cost more than $2k or so that I did for less than $200. The radio screen repair was easy and cheap, and the squealing HVAC fan was $0 and a few minutes time, and a Xenon control unit. Following that was the other Xenon control unit. These run huge money at a dealer or indy, but with a $40 unit off Amazon (versus BMW OE part at $550) and an hour of time to pull a wheel, fender liner, remove bumper cover, pull out headlight unit, I'm in it for $40 versus a dealer total of near $1k. We've done this three times now (one of those cheap $40 units died after three years). We're also experts now at E9x window regulator repair (I say "we" since my wife and I work together on the cars) having done two on the E91 and two on her prior car, E90 330i. A dealer would charge $400+ for that repair which we can do for $30 (haven't had an Amazon/eBay supplier regulator fail yet; upon close inspection look exactly like the OE part just 85% cheaper). Take brakes for instance -- I love to buy a used car that needs brakes soon. Most sellers have gotten quotes from a dealer, or indy, for huge money, and that can be used to lever the price down. Brakes are one of the simplest major component repairs you can do on a car, so a DIYer has free labor and parts from the right sources at 30+% off MSRP. Some parts you do need to buy OE like a left rear door latch unit. I bought one from an Amazon supplier and upon inspection returned it right away (my background is mechanical engineering). It was super cheaply made, and that's a part I'll never take a risk on (door latch unit). So buying from FCP Euro, BMW Morristown online, or getbmwparts to the rescue for OE suff. As an aside, to those that need to replace a door latch mechanism, BMW sells the part with the bolt holes unthreaded, so have the proper size tap at hand -- I have no idea why they do that but have just been told that's the way it is. None of this is news to DIYer's. Just wanted to point out that one additional reason why at this age some E91s have a bid under them that might not "make sense" to a traditional car owner is that DIY buyers are pricing repairs that are needed perhaps at 80% less or more than the typical buyer.

I’ll piggy back on @CSBM5 — love buying from FCP. They often have kits of parts for typical repairs, like coolant system rebuild or brake job. Kit comes with all you need for a specific maintenance job.
