BTW, If BMW came up with a recall is there a chance that they designed a new pump?
Are you sure about this? My reading of the press release is it is either a new pump OR new software OR both, depending on diagnostics. I called the dealer and was also told to wait until I received the letter before coming in.

BTW might be a good idea to call the dealer (or nearest one who would do the service) and make sure they have your car in the system with current address and contact info.

I just went thru the same process. BMW NA said that the letters will not be sent until December and that depedning on the vehicle's service/repair history, will either get a new HPFP or simply reprogrammed.

Having to wait for a letter is silly. You either have the N54 engine or you don't!

As I said earlier my car was towed in this am to the dealer 2010 135. They called at 3pm to say my failure was due to the pump and they will install it tomorrow and it should be ready for pick up then. He said they have been replacing the pumps with an updated model for a few months now.

Just got my car back

FYI. I drive a 2008 335i and I just got back my car tonight from a HPFP replacment. According to the invoice, they updated my software to 39.4.0.0 and replaced the high pressure pump (part ending in 933).

^^^This is correct...

I don't if you guys have read this whole thread or maybe you should go read the HPFP FAQ...

The people in this thread are not wrong when we tell you that there is NOTHING REALLY DIFFERENT WITH THIS....

There was already a 120K 10 Year warranty on the pump anyway. So ok..I guess you could say that now maybe a few more people at dealerships that should ALREADY know about this problem will know now.....is a good thing....

And it's not a recall to definately replace the pump...they are going to look at your service history/etc....

And yes, having to wait for a damn letter is just the dumbest thing...how in the hell could these people NOT know what to do? And you're right, either you have the right year car/motor or you don't....if they told me that, that's what I'd say anyway...

335i

two weeks prior to announced recall i dropped off my '07 335i convert for an intermitent check engine light (no long cranking problem) and they did a reprogam but did not replace fuel pump (dealer said BMW did not approve replacement). havent had the light since but the original problem was intermitent and i havent driven much (i store the car during winter) since the service. i seem to have noticed less power but that could be me having a mental issue.

curious if anyone knows what the reprogaming actually does. dealer assured me the reprogram does nothing to impact HP.

would buying the performance upgrade from BMW ( i think it adds somthing like 60HP and 100 toruqe) negatively impact the fuel pump

To my understanding BMW has only announced that they are gong to initiate a recall. It is going to take a while for BMW to get all the paperwork filed before the recall is actually put into effect. That is the reason why the dealers are telling you to wait for the letters.

This "voluntary" recall is so timely. My 2008 335xi was fine until about 2 weeks ago, when I started getting a very rough idle right after start-up. The initial cold start-up itself is taking about 6-10 seconds, and yesterday I got the yellow CEL with an iDrive description of "limited engine power". Guess it's time to go into the dealer.

They have done this to me plenty of times. From my understanding they basically erase all the error codes to see if it will pop up again. Its a procedure that they must follow unless the pump completely failed. On my case it failed 100%. I might be wrong though perhaps they really change some codes.

Here's the text from the service invoice covering last week's HPFP failure:
  • Performed vehicle test.
  • FC 29F2 and 29DC stored in DME.
  • Performed test module.
  • After checking low side fuel pump, OK at this time. Prompted to replace High Pressure Pump.
  • Submitted TC and got approval for replacement of High Pressure Pump.
  • Replaced pump (933 rmfd pump)
  • Cleared adaptations and faults in DME

The held the car overnight to perform a cold start check.

Interesting that there was no software update.

Mine goes in on Thursday for a software update even though I've informed them there is a slow start. They looked at it last Tuesday but found no CEL.

Try driving it on high 3000-5000 rpm for 10-15 minutes, it may throw in limp mode and the code, just be careful dont do this on a crowded tush hour road.

Germany has no recall - It was in the press and tv....and local dealer confirmed.

Yeah I E-mailed them right away when this all started to see. I already figured there wasn't a recall here. Which is the dumbest thing...why in the hell would there not be? What difference does it make where it's happening the most. I can not understand why it would work differently for the same car in a different country. ESPEICALLY this. They're all built in the same place and the motor is the same!! So gay. Especially since my car is U.S. spec. Are they not aware that there are A LOT of US spec BMW's running around Germany and many other countries? Not too good communication going on at BMW...

But anyway, here is the response I got. I actually got an E-mail just before this talking only about the X5 or something. Even though I told them every detail about my car..

"To Whom It May Concern:

I apologize, I believe we may have sent you information regarding a different recall in our prior response.

Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding our voluntary recall announcement of some model year 2007-2010 BMW vehicles equipped with twin-turbo inline six cylinder engines. In the affected vehicles, a failure of the high pressure fuel pump may exhibit symptoms such as long crank engine starting times along with the illumination of the “Service Engine Soon” light. In certain cases, the driver may experience reduced engine performance in a Safe Mode. An audible tone and an “Engine Malfunction” display warning will accompany any reduced engine performance.

Affected BMW models include:
• Model Year 2007-2010 335i, 335xi, 335i xDrive (all body types)
• Model Year 2008-2010 135i (all body types)
• Model Year 2008-2010 535i, 535xi, 535i xDrive (sedan & wagon)
• Model Year 2008-2010 X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Coupes
• Model Year 2009-2010 Z4 Roadster sDrive35i

Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification in December requesting the scheduling of a service appointment with an authorized BMW Center to inspect their vehicle. Drivers who now experience long cranking at start and/or reduced engine performance with illuminated warnings should immediately schedule a service appointment with an authorized BMW Center.

BMW remains committed to maintaining the highest level of automotive excellence. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience should your vehicle be affected.

Please note these recalls apply only to United States specification vehicles that are serviced within the United States. Once you and your vehicle return to the United States, we would be happy to discuss your concerns."

They're only recalling in the U.S. because of PR. They only did it after ABC News aired the story. They figured there is no bad PR in the rest of the world so why recall?

Not surprising; I'm sure this is in line with them considering ethanol to be the root source of the problem.

So if you did not buy the car new I guess you have to call BMW NA to get your name added to the Vin number.
The easier thing to do would be to got to bmwusa.com and register your car. You will need your VIN.

Been having long cranks for a few weeks now and they are getting worse and more frequent. I took it in last month when the cranks first started and was told since there was no CEL and they could not reproduce the cranks that they could not replace the HPFP.

So it's back in today but I was told the recall is VIN specific and my 07 335xi has not officially been recalled as of yet? Supposedly they do this is waves?

They claim if there are no codes and no long crank that it will not get a new HPFP until the recall is official. What a bunch of BS.

The other interesting comment my SA said is that the part of the fix beyond the fuel priming is a slight reduction in power. WTF? Are we going to get neutered again?

Once again recall is a result of an economical calculation of expenses. They dont care about lives or personal inconveniences. If the cost of a recall is less than any other trouble absence of the former can cause then the recall will happen. Applying this to Germany, there is no law suits or media campaigns against fuel pump malfunction so BMW keeps it quiet there. In USA there is a media campaign plus a law suit, somewhere on the forum it was posted.

Yeah, I understand all that....still gay..

Either way...there are a ton of US military and Gov't workers buying/driving BMW's over here....A LOT of x35 owners.....so it should apply to us. I'm not too worried about it since I'm coming back soon...but what about all the other people just now buying over here? That's all I'm saying..I think it will change anyway.

I've already recieved a pm from someone stationed over here that has talked to a dealer about this and they were told that it's already reaching over here...so we'll see...
