Burned it on Memorex DVD-R x2 speed and it works after a 5 minute reboot...!

I feel like the disc spinning noise is slightly louder than before and it is reading the disc a tad slower than the original DVD. It could all be in my head though. Anyone?

I already notice some POIs have been updated...but still long ways to go. Navteq has to do a better job updating the POIs, I wish it was real-time. I feel like the listings are a couple of years behind.

Memorex DVD+R burned at 4x with DvdDecrypter works also. I have noticed that the drive sounds like it is seeking more often, but as I am driving it more, I believe it's getting better. May be in my head though, I guess I really didn't pay attention before.

My SO said the same thing after I put in the new disc yesterday. Wonder if the data on the new disc isn't as efficiently placed as the 2007.2 version.

I am also DL the Torrent so that I can seed for a while. I think I am going to try to figure out how to strip down the disc and remove POIs and data for places I know I will never go with this car. Like Florida and Hawaii!

I'm starting to think it's more about the type of media (dvdr vs. pressed disc). My only concern is that if the drive wasn't really meant to read dvdr, or has to work harder to read it, it might wear it out sooner.

Mine acts normal, just like the original disc. I don't get any extra spinning noise or anything. Verbatim DVD-R burned at 1x FTW.

Interesting... So my disc didn't work this morning! It worked last night when I tested it, but like I said, it was a bit slower and noisier. This morning, when I started up, I got the warning "Please Insert Navigation Disc" even with the new disc in there. So I switched back to the old one and boom it worked right away, much faster. Does anyone know if the original disc DVD-R or DVD+R? Could it be that the drive is faster than x16 read speed limit of my DVD-R?

I will try burning at 1x. Do I need to check off any special options like something "Joliet"?

As long as you're using DVD-R you don't need to change anything. Just burn at 1x. I use Nero and like to do a verify after burning to make sure the disc is without errors.

Verbatim discs are the only ones I use and IMO are the best. I almost never get a bad disc and they work in everything I've used them in. I can't say the same for other brands. Especially Memorex CD/DVD discs, total pieces of shit.

Try a different brand of disc.

And really, some of you guys baby your car WAAAAYYYY too much. It's a DVD drive. You know, like the ones we have in computers and in our entertainment center? It doesn't mind working, it's a machine, it's not going to run out of breath or anything, and I hardly think you need to worry about it breaking. Optical drive technology has been around for years. They don't break unless they had a defect. Lots of seeking isn't going to reduce the life to a year or so.

What's funny is everyone says "burn at 1x" in this thread, but what's funny is most media burns at 2.4, 4 or 6x as a minimum. Just FYI.

Also any type of non pressed DVD (DVD-R, DVD+R, whatever) is going to cause the laser to strain harder and potentially wear it out quicker. Ask people that hack their Wiis, Xbox 360s, Playstation 1, etc about that one. It's under warranty, just be sure to keep your original DVD if you have any issues.

There is media that can burn at 1x, it all depends on the dye.

mine work the first time, no 5 minute restart. I only have used it for a few minutes, everything works fine, to good to be true.
This is my first time download ISO file and it took me a while to figure it out.

This is what I did, first download uTorrent the program file, and install it onto the computer.
And then download the file "BMWNav_20091.iso"
Then start the utorrent program and pull the BMWNAV_20081.iso into the uTorrent program and press start. It took me 15 hours to complete the download.
After completion, decompress the file with WinRaR, a total of 4 folders and 3 files.
Use your DVD burning program and burning all folders and files onto a DVD-R.
I use 4X.

I hope this will help some of you.

Ok, I admit that I *do* baby my car (it's only 3wks old, after all ), but additional wear and tear on the drive can reduce its lifespan significantly. It would be a big (and probably expensive) pain to repair out-of-warranty.
This hasn't stopped me from doing the same as everyone else in this thread and definitely appreciating the original guys' efforts!

Alright, I think I am an idiot when it comes to this stuff. tag, I downloaded the files you told me too. The download finished but now it is seeding? Not sure what that means. Anyone that can help, I would appreciate it. Where do I get the nero program? Thanks guys. Tell me what i need to do to help everyone else out. If I need to leave the program run, I will.
