I have a feeling if other tuners hop on board, whether they publicize ability to use their maps via SharkEdit OR if they private-label their tunes, this will be a game-changer for all.
Yep. It will be interesting to watch the dynamic between the "Pros" and their ability to market their maps/programs vs. the online mayhem that will ensue on places like E90post, with private individuals posting up their programming tips. My guess is that the smart pros will take advantage of this and plagiarize new ideas in the public domain. Pros will have to set up a viable 'update' system to keep their customers happy. And provide the appearance of 'custom' tunes to make everyone think that they are special and better than the next guy...

if you aren't comfortable tuning your own vehicle - this product still allows you to pick your hardware configuration - and take your car to a trusted tuner to have the car tuned correctly...

So to use shark-edit, you need a shark injector... correct? I know JimC mentioned that its almost finished... but I would be more interested in seeing pricing, photos, etc. of the actual shark injector for the 335 before I would be too excited about a product that requires it.

One of the most startling things about this Shark revolution is the pricing. It is so low relative to other major players -- e.g., Dinan, Vishnu -- that it's almost as if Jim is doing this for the fun of it. That, or there is a bigger payoff to the high volume trade from becoming the dominant player. I am not sure what % of BMW owners -- although this system is not limited to our little pond -- want to mess with flashing. Say 20%. Of that #, a minority will opt for the high price peace of mind offered by Dinan. The rest? Why not trot down to your local Shark outlet and get commercially injected for, say, $300? Maybe Jim and the local shop split the fee. If you (car owner) don't feel the need to possess your own little injector, this makes wonderful business sense. The system could start with big names like Turner that will bring credibility and visibility for the injector tunes (as if it didn't already have a great rep), but then spread to anyone savvy enough to run their own tuning business.

There will be different levels of injectors (or perhaps more specifically, software that includes Edit or not). Given Jim's history, I would not have any doubts whatsoever about being extremely excited.

i'd imagine he is going for volume... this product isn't going to be useful just to 335i owners... it will be useful for basically ANY and ALL bmw owners that are looking to tune... just think of the number of e36 m3 turbo guys alone that could take advantage of custom tuning!

There will be thousands of "experts" besides the standard fare. What Jim has created is an open forum whereby programs can evolve quickly, because the venue for the flow of information, and the ease of experimentation, will be so much more rapid. You will see hundreds of new ideas on lists like this regarding tweaks to the programs. You can be a passive or active participant in this revolution. Risk-taker pioneer, or let others try it first conservative. You can be a 'got to have the latest' program downloader or run to your local injector shop every week for the latest 'fix'. You can buy a Conforti program once and never change it for years. Your choice. You will have the power to change like you never have before. Instead of waiting for one Shiv to come out with new stuff, there will be hundreds of us, working together and sharing.

If I were BMW AG I would be scurrying to hire folks that understand all sides of this revolution. It's not going away, and it cannot be squashed by intimidation. They are going to have to work with it, and that is going to involve a serious 'culture-shock' to management.

I guess BMW (and all other car manufacturers) could engage in an arms race with this new open tuning venue, trying to keep one step ahead by using new DMEs with locks (viz the MDS81), or physical barriers (some lock on the ports). But I think that will be futile and unproductive. I think they need a new business model that engages the owner as entrepreneur/engineer. Perhaps their own 'tune on the fly' system.

I was helping Jim with his booth this weekend.

You wont necessarily need to have a Shark Injector to flash the car, it is just one of the options.

They are currently about to release a CAN capable bluetooth flasher. It looks a lot like the OBDII injector, but has bluetooth in it. You plug it into your OBDII port and have your laptop sync to it. From there you can do the work wirelessly.

Also, Jim is in the process of co-locating a server just to host a SharkEdit forum. This will bring all the SharkEdit users together.

Bluetooth programing, too! I'm surprised BMW hasn't tried to hire or throw money at Jim C to keep him out of this tuning market.

Bling. He always seems a step ahead. With his own forum site he can try and keep on top of the revolution -- or at least riding the crest of the wave.

There won't be "thousand" of new experts, however you will see a few users rise to the top based on the amount they know. There are private individuals who know as much (usually more) than the pros and who do it for fun, not for $$...its these guys who will lead the community and be in the forefront of much of the innovation to come using JC's new tools.

Hmmm... Just noted that our AW friend in Texas added a line to his avatar...

But OK, maybe just dozens or hundreds. And I should qualify what I meant by "expert": contributor to the group's knowledge was more of what I had in mind. I could never envision myself as an expert, but I would hope, like I think many others, to make a tiny contribution here and there. Hence the logic behind the Shark forum.

Shhh! don't give BMW any ideas. Their loss is our gain besides I'm sure Jim is going to be making money hand over fist for this gadget.

If someone is able to use this sharkedit to develop an iDrive gauge cluster similar to the one in the Nissan GTR it will put this thing over the top.
The possibilities would be endless, personally I'm surprised that BMW hasn't done the gauge cluster already.
Even the center display is capable of so much more, even if you could only display one gauge at a time.

My question is, where do we sign up to buy this thing?

Haha, no, I am not talking about AW (no offense.) I am talking about the same kind of expert you are. There will be guys who will show up who have excellent backgrounds in motorsports, tuning, etc, or just really smart shadetree mechanics that know their stuff very well. They will experiment and share with the whole community willingly.

This whole thing happened in the Evo community and some VERY intelligent people came out of the woodwork, basically the mainstays of advancing the community for free, and very, very few of them do any sort of auto related stuff for a living.
