Sorry to bump an old thread. I just installed AFE midpipes (#49-36319) and a PE (#18102208793) on my E90 and thought I'd share some information for others.
AFE revised the midpipes at some point. In the OP, the narrower section behind the flange that mates with the headers is much longer compared to the midpipes I received: ![]() Installation was very difficult on mine because the thicker pipe made it nearly impossible to access the upper nuts for tightening. Make sure you get the midpipes that are pictured in the OP. Also, I'm not sure if the length changed but my PE tips stick out too far with the AFE midpipes: ![]() I'm going to cut the Y section of the PE (where it connects to the midpipes) shorter and see if that helps. Edit: added part numbers for reference Last edited by The Nightman; 03-06-2017 at 12:33 PM.. |

PE exhaust comes with the midpipe, so no resonator.

![]() The only way to tighten the top nuts is with a crowfoot wrench and a long socket extension. I also cut ~1" off RHS pipe of the PE Y pipe and the fitment is now spot on: ![]() Sound clip: Last edited by The Nightman; 03-10-2017 at 09:24 PM.. |

Happy to report that the BMW PE and AFE mid pipes pass the commute test. My drive consists of city, highway and hilly conditions so I get to experience the exhaust in various situations. All observations made in DS mode and with windows and sunroof closed.
First, I understand that sound is highly subjective but for reference, I hate loud and obnoxious exhausts and have a very low tolerance for droning and volume. I've been through multiple exhausts on my previous vehicles (all daily drivers) due to this. In fact, I was actually hesitant to get the midpipes due to the increase in noise, but I got them for a bargain and it made for an easier installation so I went for it. Overall, the exhaust is barely audible when cruising but sounds amazing under load. I spend some time driving at 100 KPH (highway) and 70 KPH (uphill) and 2000-2500 RPM and the exhaust is not intrusive at all. It becomes more noticeable and simply sounds glorious as you approach and exceed 3000 RPM. The exhaust tone complements the engine noise perfectly and there is no droning whatsoever at any point. I also have a Euro airbox (stock filter) and Rev Motoring silicone intake pipe for reference. I would describe this exhaust combination as "factory sporty," while the PE alone would be the perfect "factory" sound. The stock exhaust is far too quiet and muted. The PE accentuates the unique sound of an I6 and while this option is more costly, it is exactly how a BMW NA I6 should sound IMO. The pops and burbles on downshifts and decelaration as the RPMs decline are worth it alone! Last edited by The Nightman; 03-13-2017 at 12:31 PM.. |

what if I used Eisenmann Muffler (instead of BMWPE) and these AFE mid pipes.
Will it sound the same as BMW PE + AFE mid pipes? any thoughts? and also what about the gained horsepower? will it be the same? Last edited by bEanz; 04-09-2017 at 11:28 PM.. |

I just mated these to my Dinan exhaust on my 2011 E92 328xi and holy hell that was rough. I had the same issues as freedomfries where the pipe shrinks to the flange too aggressively requiring 500000 1/8 turns and my drivers side mid pipe didn't shape around one of the x-drive components so I had to do a little (a lot) of hammering. But they're on now and sound great. I sent a message to aFe and they responded quick and seemed very grateful for the feedback!

Just found these for the low low and wanted to share with you guys. I picked mine up for $262.42 with free shipping in case anyone is on the fence about the price at
https://jet.com/product/detail/522db...a:2&code=PLA15 I currently have the BMW PE for my E92 N51 and love the sound, but I find it just a little too quiet. Hopefully this makes the burbles and pops a little bit more pronounced.

The chief of exhaust and called and asked what the deal was and said he was removing it form the site until they could fix it. Super awesome guy. They sent me a $60 LED flashlight that is badass. I was expecting a t-shirt or hat. Let me try and find a picture! I would still purchase it and just make the minor fab.

It won't make a very noticeable (if any) difference with the stock exhaust. Installation would entail cutting the stock exhaust after the secondary cats and then clamping these on in their place.
