Well if anyone hears this terrible noise, it's the AC compressor failing on a 2007 328i (N52)

Top end noise

Hi there folks, first post here

I'm experiencing an odd noise that seems to be coming from the top end. I believed it to be an injector because I'm experiencing some poor fuel economy. While I was going to be in that area I decided to do plugs and coils because I figured they may be fouled from the leaky injector. A couple plugs smelled like gas so I do believe this is part of the issue. Cylinder 6 was throwing a misfire code which I thought was injector based, turns out its coil was grounding. Changed the coil and the misfire code went away and the engine is running perfectly smooth. Only issue is the strange noise is still there. I'm attaching the video (or attempting to at least, been a while since I've used a forum's interface) in the hopes more experienced ears can help diagnose.

I should mention I already thought it to be rod knock and had the oil tested which showed no metal.

I plan on doing the injectors anyway just wondering if I should pickup anymore parts. Based off my research I have narrowed it down to a couple culprits:

Boost solenoid
Vanos solenoid
HPFP
The ac compressor
Waste-gate rattle (it is rpm dependent and occurs on decel when the rpm's pass 3k)

Thanks for your time, any advice is appreciated
Riley

E90 318i engine clacking

Hello all. This is my first post here. My name is Darko and I come from Croatia.
I own 2008 e90 318i.

Yesterday I drove my car on motorway really hard, like 30 minutes in range 5-6k rpm. At the end of the motorway it started making clacking noise that gradually became louder and now it is very loud. When this noise appeared, the half engine yelow light also started turning on and off every 30 seconds and it lost power.I barely came home.

This is video of the noise:

I will take my car to mechanic as soon as possible. I was wondering if anyone here knows what it could be. Thanks

Sory for my english

Is that not your timing chain?

I would be careful driving that until it is diagnosed properly.

Could be piston rod knock.

Im not driving it at all. Next week I will have it transported to BMW specialist.

I also hope that it is not bad rod bearing. If so, then I have no other options than new engine.

Thanks for your replies

Tomorrow I will try disconecting spark plugs. I found on internet that knock goes away when cylinder is not working. If it knocks all the time, it is not rod knock

Just for info. Spark plug test looked good but then I checked oil filter and it had metal particles on it. I will have to buy another engine :/

Also ticking goes with rpms like in this video.
in the end how did you stay?

my noise got worse. when accelerating you hear something loose that hits. but it did not lose strength it has no fault does not smoke escape. I dared take it apart and buy several tools. I could already change the exhaust lifts. but admission seems super difficult. You can see in the images a taquete I had a hard time taking out and I had that mark below, the photo is with a new one but the new one looks slightly larger. Excuse my English I am using google translator..

that's a hard knock.
I'd bet it's not lifter and more like rod, but it's real hard to diagnose a noise from a video.

check the oil filter for metal.
see if the noise is prominent from the oil pan.
if it is, it's bottom end things.

5 months in on the liquimoly HVA and I still haven't heard any ticks.

longest it's ever gone.

I'm not normally one for the snake oil, but I'll be damned if a $12 bottle of motor honey hasn't fixed it.

I guess it's HLA
https://www.amazon.com/Liqui-Moly-20.../dp/B0096Y6XPC

this and liquimoly 5w40.
at first it tapped more than ever with just the 5w40. Like I was going to drain and toss $70 worth of oil.
so I tried it.
it worked?

This is interesting. I wonder if you can run this with Molygen, I know it has it's own additives but I still have lifter tick.
