I've gone thru the same thing recently and went ahead and bought the 0W-40.
Some will argue the viscosity index improvers to give such a wide range are a negative. Done some reading on that and like anything to do with something as complex as lube blending have found contrary opinions. Also, somewhere I read that this oil is barely a 40 i.e. close to a 0W-30.

So I figured the 0W is good for those first few minutes of running and the (barely) 40 is good for when the car reaches operating temperature.

I will not go more than 5-7k miles oil change interval and it is LL-01 so not worried. It didn't hurt that it was cheap as chips.

The 0W-40 is the successor to what's known as German Castrol (GC), from what I understand on the BITOG forums. GC was labeled as a 0W-30 but I believe it was a thicker 30 weight -- that is, closer to a -40 than a -30. The successor is a -40 and it's an excellent oil. It's what I use in my N54, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it anywhere else.

Especially if it's on sale. Wal-Mart carries it, so does Amazon. When one lowers the price, the other usually follows suit at the same time... suspicious

I would urge you to consider the 5W-30 weight Redline oil instead. I know it's scary to run a -30 weight oil in these turbo engines, and I'm right there with you. But the Redline 5W-30 is a thicker -30 weight oil and it is also a high quality oil, meaning it will *keep* its viscosity at higher temps and will not shear down to a lighter weight oil.

I would be comfortable even tracking an N54/N55 car with Redline 5W-30, and the way I see it running 5W-40 will only make you take a hit to your fuel economy with no real benefits.

That being said, you could try running both for 7500 miles or so and doing an used oil analysis to see if any of what I'm saying is true. I'd be curious to see the results. Like I said, I suspect the Redline 5W-30 is adequate and I cannot say that about any other -30 weight oil that comes to mind other than German Castrol (which has been rebranded, correctly in my opinion, to 0W-40).

Yea that makes sense. I'm was just a little worried running a 5w30 with my tune( seeing 20 PSI) but the more I think about it all I did with my G was go from Castrol 5w30 to redline 5w30 and saw a 2 PSI increase in oil pressure at idle. I have 5w30 at the house now( left over) I will try it on my next oil changes thanx

Does anyone know -- has to be around 9% being that Most 0W-40 oils seem to be higher than their 5W-40 counterparts. I 2nd the RL 5W-30 out of warranty. In warranty, PP EURO 5W-40 ( a light 40 weight similar to GC) but I am betting a much lower NOACK . PP EURO NOACK if I remember correctly is 6.2%

great oil on paper and from the oil analysis' I've seen it looks good.

If you're tracking the car this would be by pick. group iv/v and ll01 rated . I highly doubt you'll notice the fuel economy difference between a 30 & 40w oil. driving style will have a much greater effect.

30 or 40w oils are suitable for the n54 according to bmw.

Hi, i was wondering if anyone can help me out. i just got 335i few days ago looking to do the tranny and rear difff oil change. The shop told to get get these oil for the change, can anyone confirm these will work?

Hi all,

I have an 2009 E93 328i, I will change transmission and differential fluid in next few days but I am confused with Diff fluid,
I called my local BMW dealer and asked them a part number for diff fluid they said they dont sell it and no part number is available,
I was able to get part number for differential though; 33107566191
According to him it is open differential but he was not sure.
What type of diff fluid should I get? On ECS there is one but says for limited slip diff.
I am lost.

I recently posted a UOA on Total 5w30 when I switched to Redline 5w30. I'll post the UOA on Redline in a few months. That will give the forum a back to back on two 5w30 on the same car....

New oil recommendation from BMW? 0w30

I recently read this:
"BMW discontinued 5W30 in favor of 0W30 in Fall 2016 as part of an effort to reduce emissions on cold start-up and improve fuel economy. BMW now recommends 0W30 for all models that called for a LL-01 5W30."

But as of Jan.1, 2017, new fuel regulations have come into place in US and Canada and the sulfur content of US/Canadian fuels (<10ppm) is now in line with European fuels, so is the need for 'Euro' formula oils out dated? I'm thinking using a 'FULL SAPS' rated oil might even be wrong at this point. What are your thoughts?

Batches of mogas in the US can be as high as 95ppm sulfur. The 10ppm is an average. Would this change anything in your thinking?

Has anyone tried the new MolyGen stuff ECS is carrying? They make some bold claims. I feel like the UV fluorescence is gimmicky, but then I recently fixed an oil leak so it'd be nice to know what's old and what's new, if I notice any more in the future.

Found these, looks interesting 100% synthetic, ll01, 5w40 is on the thicker side, 0w40 is ok, btw redline is not cheap and i dont believe they are approved ll01 either
Also, total quartz 9000 0w30 (used to be 100% synthetic now synthetic technology) and many more

How about the old school Castrol rebranded BMW-logo High Performance SAE 5W30, PN 07 51 0 017 866? Is that really LL-01?

There are recent posts on the other enthusiast forum saying that BMW-logo is not LL-01 approved(the back label only lists A3/B3).
