I put aside the stuff I don't enjoy sipping for making Black Tooth Grins - an old nostalgic tradition that I seldom have the taste for anymore (any Megadeath/Pantera fans?). A buddy of mine will usually get us in the mood when he visits.

My last bottle of this bad boy. Can't believe how expensive and rare this is now.

I see people ordering Crown Royal and coke and I'm like, what's the point. Use a cheap liquor for mix, it's not like you can taste or appeciate Crown Royal when it's mixed. I happen to like Woodford, and I often recommend it to people who are just getting into whisk(e)y's because it has a nice easy flavour profile.

Just my two cents.
100% agree there is something for everyone! Woodford had to much oak/tannin for me, but I know there are folks here who don't like Buffalo Trace.

100% disagree that one should use cheap liquor for mixing! I mostly drink it neat, but every now and then I want something different.

Whisky in one of those spirits that can stand on its own, but also plays well with others. And it does make a difference. Whisky is so broad that a cocktail will be completely different if you choose different whiskys.

Not withstanding the fact that Whisky/Soda isn't the same as an Old Fashion or Whisky Sour, I'll tell you that mixing Ardbeg 10yo and Coke was an awesome experiment and drastically different that the Jack and Coke I drank in high school.

Savage!

My life long friend is the Whisk(e)y consultant for Johnnie Walker, so I get to drink a lot of different stuff with him. His personal collection is over 200 single malts, and probably 100 or so blends, we have done the Bourbon Trail a number of times, it's a business expense for him so I tag along. On a hot day he likes to drink JW and ginger ale....I don't get it.

I know that different spirits and even different distillers of say rum or whisk(e)y will give a cocktail a different flavour, I just can't bring myself to mix expensive spirits but that's just me.

Don't get me wrong, I'd likely never mix the higher end $$$ bottles, because I enjoy whisky neat more than anything. So we're mostly on the same page there.

But I typically keep 2-3 different bottles that can be used in cocktails. It's a holdover from when we used to entertain more and knowing most folks don't drink whisky neat And since most folks just think Jack is all there is with whisky, it's nice to show them a little extra love with something more unique (less common). Make 'em feel special.

I'd have no problem mixing Jack if someone wanted that, hell if I'm making a Rusty Nail I tend to use Glenfiddich 12 year old, but that's about the best whisk(e)y I'd ever use to mix.

I guess when I think about using bourbon to mix Woodford just doesn't come to mind, as there are lots of decent bourbons for a lot less money, and I like to drink Woodford neat.

We keep a bottle of Jim Beam or Jack Daniels next to the stove, my loves to cook with it....I'd use those to mix.

If I ever have a guest try to mix my Balvenie there might be words exchanged.

my dad spiced up his egg nog with a 14y sherry finished Four Square rum when they were visiting over the holidays. I was not happy. He apparently doesn't know what "top shelf" is and didn't know rum could be over $100 a bottle.

Shocking. How many years did you get and was it a fair trial?

I'm liking this. Tastes a bit sweeter and more well rounded vs Redbreast which tasted a little too clean and sharp (not that it's a bad thing).

Yellow Spot is a little better than the Green. The Red Spot is apparently not worth the money (from what I've heard, never tried it).

I just picked up some Lagavulin 8 (interested to try, really liked the 12), some Teeling Irish whiskey, and because I've been curious, I picked up a bottle of Proper 12.

Anyone tried the proper 12 yet? Reviews are polarizing, most seem to concede it is crap, but there are those that really like it. Cannot tell if they are just being fan bois of Macgregor though. But Macgregor has made money from it, and I wanted to try it for myself. It may be the first and last bottle, or it may be something I buy again since it is cheap.

Lagavulin 8 is one of my newer favorites - not as refined as the 16, but I like the younger ones. Buy it up if you like it - it is supposedly a limited release.

Yup, that's what I was saying before. Can't even find it in Japan and when you do be prepared to pay an arm and a leg for a bottle.

Consensus on this site is apparently it is really good. I personally am not a fan, but I really am not a fan of most Irish whiskys.

I opened this up last night. I really enjoyed it, a bit of spice like you'd expect from a rye, sweet and smooth finish. I ended up having a few of them.

Cheers.

I am liking this Talisker 10!! Good recommendation. Good amount of peat, sweetness and smoothness. Good taste too. I might end up finishing the bottle sooner than I'd like. Lol

Nice

Tell me if you can taste the salt/brine note. It's one of the things I love about Talisker 10
