I need a question answered if possible I have a 2011 BMW335is with a build date of 06/2010. I have the premium package and does anyone know if our cars on that build date have upgraded sub frame bushing as well as upgraded upper and lower control arms???? I went to the dealership to see if the part numbers were the same for a basic 335i and was told they shared the same part numbers.
I had them look at the price difference for the 335is upper and lower control arms and the M3's control arms. The price difference is $50.00 also I asked the same breakdown for the sub frame bushings and the price difference for the M3 sub frame bushings is $100.00. I want to do the upgrade to the M3 parts that so many on the forum have done with their 335's but I don't want to invest a chunk of money on it if the handling difference is minuscule. Please any insight or info is anyone has upgraded these parts and if it had a noticeable effect on the suspension. Just some background on what I am trying to achieve, I have a daily driver that I want to improve on how it handles, I haven't modded it in anyway and maybe just want to add a FMIC, Dinan Exhaust and maybe BMW or Dinan performance sportier springs. No 335is use upgraded/M3 style bushings (other than the engine mounts). Our cars basically have plain ol' ZSP suspension. Nothing special.
The performance difference when upgrading those parts is very noticeable. Keep in mind the parts may not be much more expensive but it's the labor that will set you back, particularly on the subframe bushings swap. Still worth it if you have the coin. Once you do the arms and bushings swap you may want to switch to non-RFT tires as your ride will suddenly become very harsh if you are still running RFTs. That's basically the reason non-M cars hav ethe floppy bushings - to take up the slack that RFT's don't. Last edited by ashmostro; 08-21-2014 at 08:57 AM.. |

It will help with turn in but I'd save up for stiffer springs and shocks first if you aren't doing it all at once. Since front sways are very easy to change (unlike the rears), it's not a big deal to wait and do them separately.
Rears are known to be a bad idea on our platform unless you are also doing a limited slip diff. Again, springs and shocks are better. |

Thanks, Ashmostro for all the info, I now feel comfortable in upgrading my control arms and sub frame bushings and now can make the decision on how much farther I want to go with future upgrades for my car.

You bet. Are you doing both front and rear control arms? I highly recommend it if you aren't considering that already (realized your first post didn't say, which is why I mention it).

I read upgrading the rear control arms is not worth doing, if I didn't go to a LSD. I also read that the M3 Sub frame bushings may vibrate and create a harsher ride due to the stiffness of the bushings, but to be honest I only read 1 post, that said that and the post didn't state what other suspension mods he performed on the car. I don't have run flats I have staggered wheel setup (19x8.5 in front and 19x9.5 in back), so I wonder if this vibration also may have been from the car having run-flats on them.
I was told by a speed shop that a custom alignment may also achieve the tightness and more connected feel to the road instead of replacing the front control arms, I wonder how true that is. So I am again scratching my head, wondering about whether to invest in the control arm upgrade or see if the alignment is the answer...lol had no idea the info out there would be so vast and varying. Your info did help me clarify things in my head and I think I am going to go with upgrading to the M3 bits upfront and will think about the sub frame bushing upgrade unless that would be silly not to do and do you think the rear control arms would create more of a balance or would be an over kill??? I am not going with an LSD in the future. Last edited by Johnsonuspp; 08-21-2014 at 10:36 AM.. |

You are not wrong to be confused... there is a lot of conflicting information out there because a lot of this is preference and circumstance.
My opinion for best bang for the buck is, do the arms front and rear, along with the subframe bushings, and get a good alignment with max camber up front with proportionally less camber in rear. This will give you better tracking, less understeer, and improved responsiveness. You will get a bit more impact harshness but nothing that doesn't feel appropriate for a GT performance car. These mods are the basics for a proper ride that our cars should have had out of the box. If you want to take it further then you can consider springs, shocks and more pricey items like a diff. With the bushings upgrades, if you only do a few items on each end, you run the risk of increasing stresses on the non upgraded parts which can lead to premature failure (not too common on normal timescales), or more likely weird behavior over bumps. Again, this is all my opinion and others may suggest a different order of operations for equally thoughtful reasons. |

Awesome now just have to source the parts for a reasonable cost, you wouldn't by chance have a part list for the rear control arm upgrade??? you have been a tremendous source of information and again thanks.

Ecs tuning has great kits already set up- enter in your car and search under suspension... It's a well designed site. I recommend saving money on the trw branded stuff which is oem for bmw anyway.
Any questions, just come back here. |

I'll be doing the front and rear control arm upgrades, front m3 sway bar, rear toe arms (megan), and solid subframe bushings next.

Yes, the control arm upgrade kits along with the subframe bushings.
Installation prices vary wildly by shop... I'd call around for an estimate. Highly recommend using a shop that's done the job many times before on our cars- they will take less time which usually means less $. |
