I have a 2012 BMW 328i automatic with the 188 medium differential. Last march I had your limited slip differential professionally installed and it performed flawlessly. The backlash was set at 0.003 of an inch. About a month or so ago after the installation of Powerflex purple Polyurethane differential bushings and a weekend of spirited driving, I began to notice a clucking noise coming from the rear of the car. I took the car back to Arizona Driveshaft today to try and isolate the source of the clunk, which we think we did. We discovered that both rear axles have what we believe to be an excessive amount of end play. The left rear axle has 0.045 inches of end play while the right rear axle has 0.050 inches of end play. Can you please confirm if the amount of end play we measured is within specification for my car?

The play is the overall back-lash of the internal gears of the LSD and ring & pinion, and has always been there. The reason why you only now notice the noise is because you upgraded to stiffer diff bushings, which don't dampen the noise/vibration like the oem bushes do.

Update: Last March I had the MFactory helical LSD installed in my 328i, and it performed flawlessly throughout my entire track day and beyond. Then in June I had the purple Powerflex polyurethane differential bushings installed right before a weekend road trip with the local BMW club. The first thing I noticed when I hit the highway was a substantial increase in the NVH, specifically gear whine and vibration. After a day of hard driving through the canyons I began to notice a clunking sound coming from the rear of the car, which got worse over the next month. I was rather convinced that this noise was the result of the LSD, which proved to be a false assumption on my part. I spoke to the good folks at MFactory and sent them a PM and they were rather certain the clunking noise I was experiencing was a result of the polyurethane bushings. I then took the car to the garage who did the LSD installation and after a test drive and inspecting the car on the rack, they were rather certain the clunking noise was not coming from the differential, and they recommended I change the differential bushings. I ordered the new MFactory differential bushings as referenced in another thread and had them installed, and the clunking noise I was experiencing in the rear end is now gone. While there is a slight increase in NVH as compared to the stock bushings, it is not nearly as bad as the polyurethane bushings. The garage who did the bushing install said the polyurethane bushings I had installed only 1 1/2 months prior were already distorted, which was causing the clunking noise. Based on my experience, we now have a nice in between alternative to stock differential bushings and polyurethane bushings. Thank you MFactory!

Hi there. I just discovered this thread a few days ago, and read every single post. I have a 2008 335i MT, with I presume the 3.08 final drive and welded diff.
I see that there's a huge price difference between the 3.08 and 3.46, when talking about fully rebuilt pumpkins. The 3.46 provides faster acceleration over 3.08(referencing one of your earlier posts from last year), but what is the end result in terms of mileage, and engine RPMs? Right now I can get ~27-28 MPG while driving in 6th gear at ~3k RPM and at ~70-80MPH. How would the 3.46 affect those numbers? I do a lot of highway driving, and would hate to end up having to drive at 3.5k+ RPM for extended periods of time. Thanks! |

With regards to mileage, if you do a lot of highway driving, then your mpg will decrease slightly (how much by, it's hard to say). However, if you also do a lot of stop & go driving, then you will actually increase your mpg. For most people who do a good mixture of driving, they don't really see any loss in combined mpg.
