One of my favorites from the psychedelic era:
Chambers Brothers - Time Has Come Today (short version; 1967)

Jimi Hendrix - The Star-spangled Banner (1969 at Woodstock)
I was already gone from home when I got this album -- and used to play it at max volume. My parents would've been horrified at the defacement of the national anthem. Jimi was an Army veteran and I suspect played it in his own way with respect, which is the way I listened to it and still do.

Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne"...
"The ballad is an autobiographical and bittersweet recollection of a chance Christmas Eve encounter with an “old lover in the grocery store" in his native Peoria. But to Jill Greulich, the song means much more, as she is that old lover." https://www.sj-r.com/story/entertain...ter/115115630/ |

Back in the '50s and early '60s it seemed to be common to have a segment in songs with the singer talking instead of singing. Sort of odd if you ask me. Here's a song I like that illustrates the pattern.
Johnny Tillotson - Without You (1961)

Another one from the Tommy rock opera... but recorded live at Woodstock. The energy is amazing!
The Who - Listening to You (1969) When the movie came out in 1970, I was in the Navy in Monterey, California. Several of us went to watch the movie and were absolutely blown away. We decided to go back the next evening and watch it again. I never made it -- had a motorcycle accident on the way and ended up in the emergency room.
