It would be wise to have a plan in place for this repair because it will not only leave you in need of a tow, but will also leave you out of commission until a replacement is delivered if you plan to diy. I had to do this repair on the street instead of my garage because I did not have a way to push/pull my car up my steep driveway.

I have a trailer, tow vehicle, and extra vehicle if need be, it will only be bad if I break down on a trip. It it definitely reasonable to want to be prepared in case it happens though. Also, you could have just driven it into the garage. You wouldnt have power steering, battery charging, or a/c, but it would still drive into the garage fine since the most important bits still work.

With such a wide range of mileage to failure, it would be nice to see if there's a correlation between geography and mileage to failure. I would expect dampers to fail sooner in the hot dry southwest and last longer in the cold humid northeast. If anyone else is interested and knows a simple way to setup a survey on this board, please do.

I'm still waiting for this new and improved damper, but I don't want to push my luck too much.

I don't think there is a good way to predict when it is going to fail. It probably also depends if the engine is at idle a lot or mainly on the highway. Also A/C will put considerable load on the pulley.
Mine degraded from last year May at 115k miles (see post http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...&postcount=130)
to now at 125k miles looking like this:

If you need to the remove the main serpentine belt before the whole process just to inspect the pulleys, it is useful to have a helping hand. And if you do not have the egr cooler already, you can just remove the engine acoustic cover and release the belt. Then check the pulleys and put it back on. It is a bit tight in there with the rad fan in place, but with two people should be doable.

I got a little confused by this picture thinking the arrow points to the little red field (which marks the engine serial number). Instead the arrow points to one hole at the rear flange of the engine which I marked red in this enhanced picture:

Should the damper have any wobble? Mine has a little.
My new one (Febi) has a very slight wobble as well. I don't remember my old one to have any wobble.

I'm at 110k approx, any word on the fluid dampr progress? A while ago I had to replace my serp belt after the ac belt decided to die and damage the serp. I'm running without the ac belt until fluiddampr, to put less stress on the stock one.

I'm not an expert but I would think having the AC belt would actually reduce the stress on the balancer, it pulls in the opposite direction of the serpentine.

True, but the serpentine is at the centerline of the rubber but ac is at the edge so it pulls at an angle like a lever. Don't know what's better but would prefer not to deal with stretching it on if hopefully fluid dampr comes out soon

I would agree with the above...if you also include age. I highly doubt that if you went stage 3 at 36000 mi, it would go out within the month.

That said....I was the one that started the "this car is killing me" thread because mine went out right after the tune.... So there is more likely a correlation but I wouldnt say causation...

So the last update by kydiesel35 was 3/29. Do we have anymore updates? I'm wondering if this will ever happen. Should someone else give them a call? Might at least let them know there is plenty of interest.

Yeah, they are missing out on a whole new wave of failures too, as summer driving season is here, there is another spike in failure reports.

Congratulations!!! So they are still working on it, and it's still happening. That's all that matters. The sooner, the better. Take care!
