To Josh49, Kruz, et. al. Help!!
I'm trying to install the hardwire following the DIY guide set forth by everyone here without any luck. I'm hoping one of you guys would be kind enough to offer some suggestions.
Info: 2008 E90 335i sedan radar detector: V1 with hardwire kit What I've done so far: 1. Went to Kragens and bought Add-A-Circuit 2. Inserted 5amp fuse into slot B of Add-A-Circuit 3. Crimped the V1 hardwire cable (using the blue slicer that comes with the hardwire kit) to the Add-A-Circuit red wire 4. Inserted Add-A-Circuit to slot 7 per diagram, no power to V1 5. Turned Add-A-Circuit 180 degrees and reinserted, no power to V1 Things I didn't do: disconnect car battery. connect groundwire from hardwire cable to car. Should this matter? I'm at a loss at this point. Help!! Thanks in advance. |

You need to connect the ground wire to the car or else the circuit does not complete. Do that and it should work.

If you're going to work on the A-pillar, make sure to have a beer first to calm your nerves..

And wash your hands first, or wear latex gloves... the a-pillars stain easily from what I've heard. I didn't really have too many issues with taking it off though if I recall...

Thanks for the tip. I spent 2 hours routing the wire to the fuse box and I was completely bummed when the fuse tap wasn't working properly. I tried every 5 amp fuse in the box, and they either didn't power on or they would stay on after I turned off the ignition. After rereading this thread I noticed that you put the fuse tap in with the fuse hanging off to the left and it worked! Had to cut out some of the gray plastic adjacent to it, but it was no big deal (wire cutters took care of it in 30 seconds). Thanks. Mine is an '08 e92, btw.

I just did the hardwire install, piece of cake. Thanks for the suggestion on removing the A-pillar, that helped a lot and made it cleaner in my mind. To make re-installation of the A-pillar easier, I also pulled up the rubber moulding around the door frame. All you do it just pull on it until it slips off the frame, very easy. Plus it allowed me to slip the wire from the V1 completely behind the glove box for a nice clean look.

Being the electrical system moron that I am, I have a question. I'm going to do the hardwire this weekend. The hardwire kit has an inline fuse. When I crimp on the mini fuse add-a-circuit, should I cut the wire before or after the inline fuse? In other words do I keep or get rid of the inline fuse? Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

I'm not an expert, but I would get rid of the inline fuse, assuming that you have the same fuse tap connector that I used. As long as you have a fuse on the add-a-circuit (I think that's the kind you have) for your hardwire connection I don't think you would need the inline fuse.

Keep the fuse... It's just another fail safe and it really doesn't hurt to have it there per se.
