Persistent Misfire in Cylinder 3

I'm getting a persistent misfire in cylinder 3. New plugs, new coils; swapped new plugs and coils in cylinders 3 and 1; misfire stays in cylinder 3.

Time to replace injectors? Looks like my current ones are index 7.

126,000 miles, completely stock.

I've read through this thread, just praying I can find an answer.

Did you swap injector 3 into another cylinder to rule it out. I have an 08 and mine went right around the same milalage

That's a good idea. I don't have a tool to pull the injectors right now, but I was planning on purchasing one anyhow if/when I replace the injectors.

Are there any concerns with swapping injectors without replacing the seal? Obviously I'd try to do it quickly.

Misfire Cylinder 3

Had a "Misfire Cylinder 3" code. Rough idle, rough acceleration.

- new plugs
- new coils
- cleaned intakes
- replaced VCG (not intended to fix the misfire but it needed to be done)
- new injectors

Put it back together and "Misfire Cylinder 3". What's next? Bank 1 pre-cat O2 sensor? I just ordered one. No idea what else it could be. Wiring harness?

I haven't been online for a while. So you think it may be timing related? Maybe I should run some logs and see if anything interesting shows up under light load when the car seems to be misfiring. It looks like the MHD requires an android device.

I was chasing misfires for months before I bought & installed an intercooler and flashed MHD. Misfires went away immediately and I fell in love with my car all over again.

MHD costs:
- Cheap Android Tablet - $70 (I got a refurbed Galaxy Tab from Walmart)
- DCAN cable: $25
- MHD BEF flasher: $79
- Total: $174

A leaky valve cover gasket can cause misfires?

What about a poor connected vent hose? Top left on no # 9.

The square clips don't seem to hold the vent hose securely in place, and there is always a 1 -3 millimeters gap. I found my clips partially broken too.... Managed to secure it better with zip ties at the moment.

help please negative timing during wot

so every time I go wot it either drops -3 on one cylinder, some or all please help! e92 FBO 66k miles! just got done putting it together, it's on mhd v7 stage 2 and v8 stage 2 on data logs. I know its the DME helping knock but whats causing it? when DME corrects its usually IAT, plugs, coils, too aggressive map or trash fuel. I know its not too aggressive map because come on its mhd not no custom map and it has brand new coils and plugs with less than 250miles on them and its not the fuel. i know my IAT's were hot but were the hot enough to pull timing and don't worry 7.5 inch will be here Friday!

Posting just to relay my misfire story (knock on wood):

Bought the car in August from my mom who has owned it since new, 63k miles on a 2008 335i. Car had a pretty serious misfire when getting in the higher RPMs and especially in boost. She didn't really notice/care, but had all the maintenance records. The plugs and coils were only 10k miles old, a couple injectors had been replaced, but not since like 2013. I did a couple full throttle pulls and got the car to throw a code, cyl 3 misfire.

1) Replaced the plugs and the cyl 3 coil. Car wouldn't even idle properly. Threw the stock coil back in and it ran fine. So it was either bad out of the box or I didn't seat it properly. So basically all the plugs were new Bosch replacements and the car ran much better. Still misfiring ever so slightly, but much better than before.

2) Replaced all the vacuum lines, no change.

3) Finally got the intake valves walnut blasted, this completely cured the misfire. The car runs perfectly smooth at full throttle all the way to redline. The pic of the intake didn't look too bad, but lots of gunk around the valves themselves. I was surprised that could make such a difference.

Now the car is getting driven daily on my 50 mile/day commute, so it'll get 15-20k a year on it instead of 5-6k. My mom did a ton of very short trips, so I'm betting putting more sustained highway miles on it will be better for the car in the long run.

My misfire has only gotten worse. Last week I checked cylinder compression. They were all very low but close in numbers. The cheap harbor freight tester I used reads low because of how it is designed. I just finished the walnut blasting last night and that didnt help either. Below is what I have done to date. Getting tired of BMWs. Dealing with this is a PIA and now I found out my 2013 X5 needs a new engine (uses a quart of oil every 600 miles). These cars just seem too unreliable.

exhaust vanos replaced
new oem plugs
new oem coils
walnut blasting
compression check
swapped injectors with old injectors I had from other cars. made no difference swapping out 2 at a time.

Next
intake vanos replacement
Remove JB4 tune?
Replace precat 02 sensors?
Swap more injectors around or just buy a set?

I replaced all of the injectors with index 12 injectors and the car still misfires! I guess I will remove the jb4 and see if that could be causing it. then do O2 sensors next. After that.... off to the junk yard and I'm done with BMW. I'll go back to american made.

Removed the JB4. That didn’t help. I guess I’ll do O2 sensors next.

Replaced the O2 sensor in bank 1. Didn't help anything.

I'm starting to wonder if the car has a blown headgasket from overheating when the water pump went out the second time (almost a year ago). The car went into limp mode with reduced power. I drove it about another 5 miles on reduced power until I parked it as it wouldn't drive anymore under its own power due to the computer limiting. It was freezing outside when this happened. The next day I started the car and drove it home. It hardly started at first. Once it did start it smoked and misfired horribly for a few minutes. Turns out the water pump mechanics didn't fail. The housing actually cracked allowing all of the coolant to leak out. Possibly it had a minor gasket leak that has slowly gotten worse.

Car passed blown head gasket test.

However, I think I had a break through today with some with something else. I pulled fuse 26 which disables the awd system. The car does not misfire with this fuse out. So I believe it isn’t actually a misfire. I think the issue is related to the transfer case or the 4x4 system. It just feels exactly like a misfire.

What coils did you use? What sort of tune do you have on a 325? Injector might be the issue. From what I understand, you can only use 11 & 12 in the same bank..

So, if you had like 10 and below in the other 2, in the same bank, and put a new 12 in that would make sense. Also, most people would suggest Eldor coils when doing a tune.

I replaced all 6 coils with BMW Direct Ignition Coil - Bosch 0221504465 and also replaced injector 2 but is still have cylinder 2 misfire. I don't know what else can it be.

I don't understand what you mean 11 & 12 in the same bank.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.
