Thank you for the offer for help. I'm happy to say that he project is on track and nearly complete. Expect some news on Independence Day. That release date seemed appropriate for obvious reason

Nice. I'm looking forward to opening up some more fuel for high concentrations of e85 while using my procede. I'm glad the holiday you're releasing wont be labor day (as in the day you stop laboring on this project).

Wow, this is quite a project. So after reading through most of the pages the idea is to make a open source flash tuner, where you can either buy maps made by sponsors (Shiv?), customize your tunes (if you have the knowledge), share maps between users? In other words something like a Cobb pro tuning platform except open source?

My question to sponsors (Shiv), how would you protect your flash tunes as you know once Napster idea takes off it will be have similar fate as MP3. GIAC does flash tuning but I think they encode your ECU so the code can't be copied / stolen (of course as with everything it will get "hacked" at some point).

I don't believe they plan on protecting their maps, which is a good move. I think they will use it as a way to deliver their procede flash which compliments their procede piggy.

Shiv and Terry both have piggybacks that enhance the capabilities of the factory ecu, they aren't really flash tuners anyway, so their business model is different. Tuners who write custom tunes will still write custom tunes. Since no car is identical, mods vary, gas/temperature/climate vary, they will still be in business just fine. Cobb will still make money off people uninterested in DIY type things and people who want a simple turnkey solution. But everybody will feel some changes of course. The consumers will benefit greatly overall with added power and safety, although some idiots will probably blow things up or brick a dme.

Very excited!

Still think I'd buy a COBB anyways. Unless there was some special feature I couldn't get any other way. Its worth the money to support their efforts IMO.

I agree with custom tuners, but if a flashing project will be similar to COBB (the only thing I imagine is that you have a laptop instead of COBB unit) and almost as easy to upload / flash tunes, then why get COBB. I would assume initially that will not be the case as COBB is further down the path, but once there are enough users tunes / maps will improve. I would see some vendors like COBB getting worried as at some point all these maps / tunes could be copied fed via flashing project. In that case COBB would not get anything as their maps are free and they make money on selling "flashing" units.

I can't speak for the final product, but the test version of Rombinhood's device has some features that I'd call quite special.

Yeah, like combining trouble code reading / clearing + maybe reading / resetting service history etc...

Thanks that is good news. And by the sounds of it you had a lot of fun developing this. When a developer loves making something the end user is always the winner.

Looking forward to your release.

If its truly open source like were all hoping then this project will supercede Cobb very quickly...Think about Cobb in other markets they have cool features included on the AP's like 2-step launch control, map switching, changing OEM button programming in the car, etc...Since Cobb is rolling out these extra "luxury" features on the N54 at their own rate along with balancing other projects/platforms...I am sure the open source scene here will have a much bigger need for those types of features therefore end up being quite interesting...

After tuning cars for nearly 20yrs, I don't believe that you ever need to encrypt your tuning file. Especially if a customer pays for you to actually tune their car. The skill of a tuner is mapping a specific car the way it needs to be mapped for best performance. This will change from car to car and condition to condition. So the concept of paying for an encrypted map that was "tuned" via email is lost on me. If it works for others, they can still go that route. In the long run, a more open source solution makes sense for actual tuning shops as well as regular users who want to learn from each other and share information. This, IMHO, is the only way to advance the state of the art. There will still be a place in the market for every good product as no one product will fit the bill for everyone. But some will come closer than others.

I'm as frustrated as anybody with Cobb's pace on the extra features, but the more I understand how the code works the more I sympathize with them. A good 2-step will be a lot more difficult to implement on this platform that it was on older platforms. I could see the open source project actually getting it done sooner because it will require customization that Cobb just may not be interested in doing for the amount of incremental sales it would generate.

I think just being able to have full access to an unencrypted ROM file will benefit many people. For instance, just being able to ask the community how to disable any particular torque limiter code and being told something like "change the value @ 442F0 from 22 to 00." Done. Having hundreds of clever programmers doing this stuff for free, with no desire to monetize their knowledge or keep IP to themselves while genuinely wanting to help others helps push development forward quickly. That's the advantage of open source mapping.
