What a surprise coming back to see the progress of the single turbo conversion. It's fantastic to see a application of a reasonably sized turbo on the BMW platform. All these turbos are on Evos or 2JZs.
What I'm really interested on is how the EFR7670 behaves on the 3.0L, and how the upper flow capacity will be like. Are you intending to monitor turbo shaft speed? It would be a good idea especially on a EFR not to overspread them. I'm currently undecided between the 7670, and 8374, but leaning towards the smaller unit as a 62mm might really be too much of a response sacrafice for a street Aussie car. Even if the light weight turbine wheel etc. Judging from the videos the boost threshold, spool rate and gear to gear transitions seem to be on par with what I expected from a EFR. Transients seem to be its biggest difference to the rest of the crop. |

If you got a spare logging channel, putting a pressure sensor T off the line to the WG canister will give you a good idea if the solenoid is bleeding down correctly. One of the design features is the IWG ports are at very shallow angles with the exhaust flow. You would have noticed that looking down into the inlet. High EGBP can cause the IWG flap to push open, but it would be unlikely at 10psi and the manifold design / 3" exhaust back. I would first check if the boost box is controlling the solenoid properly, resulting in a pressure in the line between the actuator and solenoid, is lower than manifold pressure. |

Just got back from Tas 2 cruise.. great trip and big thanks to Vince for organizing and the guys for making their way down from Sydney... 10 cars, 4 days and over 2000 KM on super twisty roads and some spirited driving along the way..... No breakdowns (who said the N54 was unreliable). The most unreliable car went to DrJs who's CP popped off. 2 min fix and he was on the way again. SPCGRY only mishap was a busted front lip (ran over a parking concrete block in the car park at Port Arthur

After months trying to get the setup with the boostbox working, we are growing increasingly frustrated with the Motiv tune. With the response rate from Motiv averaging 0.5-1 week, this has dragged out for months with not much more than waste gate pressure achieved. I am certain we could be at this for a few months longer with no real progress.
The issue is that we cannot get much response out of the wastegate with the boost box. At 50% WGDC we get nothing but wastegate spring pressure out of the turbo. It requires around 70-80% to get some boost out of it. But after repeated attempts asking we have only received 45-50% wgdc maps. They have given us a boost box that operates at a higher frequency to match up with the EFR solenoid but this had very little effect. They don't appear to be interested in answering our questions or addressing our comments/concerns in the emails responses which also massively adds to the frustration. It really doesnt feel like they are working with us, and in general all the maps have been stabs in the dark. We have decided to go with the N54 wastegate actuator, which in theory should allow OEM-like control of the EFR. Not having a 3rd party converter in the way is also a big plus. We will work with a local tuner in Melbourne who will be much more responsive than working with a busy company in the USA. In order to fit the N54 wastegate actuator on the EFR, I have to fabricate up a bracket to make it fit. The N54 actuator is a 3 bolt pattern and the EFR IWG actuator is a 2 bolt. An adapter plate needs to be constructed, similar to those alloy wheel PCD adapters. A couple of the guys at my work have constructed a mini foundry to melt metals, they got a huge number of old hard drives and melted down all the metal for projects. I obtained one of the melted down muffins and machined the outside round shape on my lathe. This worked very well and the material is quite good with little defects or porosity. The material itself appears to be a magnesium/aluminium alloy, it machines very well and forms fine chips instead of strings when machined. I did a CAD drawing in Sketchup, but found the export options quite poor. It was still useful visualizing the part and making sure it can actually be made. If the bolt spacing for the EFR was different, it may overlap the holes for the N54 wastegate and I would have to make the part from 2 pieces. It ended up being possible to make it from one piece, and I redid the part in QCAD for the 2D export. I printed this out at 1:1 ratio and overlaid the paper on the metal part, then centre punching all the holes. I then drilled out all the holes using a drill press. I found the 14mm holes for the N54 wastegate were too small to fit any of my sockets in. I ended up machining a spare socket so I could actually assemble the part. Finishing touches required are: - 14mm holes for the N54 actuator nuts were drilled with a normal drill. This has a 60degree point, but I need a flat hole. 14mm end mill has been purchased - Stud holes for the EFR have not been tapped all the way. A normal M6 tap can't go very deep. Have ordered an M6 bottoming (plug) tap to finish the hole all the way down. - The N54 wastegate rod is too short by about 10mm ![]()
