iPhone OS 3.0 - it's big ... very big
03.13.09 -- 4:28 p.m.

I've been sitting here thinking about the big iPhone announcement on Tuesday, talking to people in the know, using social media sites like Twitter and Facebook -- and I've discovered that the expectations for OS 3.0 aren't only high, they're all over the map.

Think about it ... We all want different things, but we also agree on certain things.

Take MMS as an example. We blame Apple for not having it. Some of us swear by it. Others say it's a waste of time.

I say that while it would be much easier to MMS a photo to my sister in South Carolina who doesn't have email capability on her cell phone, I also understand Apple wanting the iPhone to be simple. But in the same breath I'll say that cell phones Ive used 3 years ago have more features than the iPhone -- just not features like the app store. It's here where Apple obviously excels ... but sometimes you've gotta find a middle ground. Too much focus on those features and not enough on industry standard ones like MMS have us wondering if Apple really understands the mobile playing field.

Believe me ... Apple gets it. It really gets it. But like a stubborn teenager that won't tell his or her parents what's wrong with them, Apple keeps this nearly patented veil of secrecy surrounding Cupertino like an invisible forcefield. That forcefield is smart in business but terrible for consumer relations. As a consumer, I love Apple's products but hate how they operate.

So what will 3.0 bring? Chances are, a lot. And I'm going to go out on a limb and say it might be the base software for some sort of portable netbook type of device. I know nothing of this device but let me just say what I've said all along ... It won't look like those horrendous netbooks that are out there now. Believe me ... The folks working on this in Apple's bunker of a lab 20,000 leagues below northern California let out a cheer no one on the surface can hear everytime one of those crappy looking netbooks come out -- same reaction as the Kindle, I'd say.

No, trust me ... This portable thing will be different. It will redefine mobile space. It won't be a phone and it won't be a laptop. It will fall right in the middle and it will be droolworthy. It will connect wirelessly with your home network and connect to a TV and Apple TV. It will be a hunk of glass, all black and silver to match everything else Apple is putting out. It may or may not have a dock. It's going to be beautiful.

Oh and yeah, it's going to be expensive. One thing Apple sucks at is pricing. It will still cost you and someone will come out and talk about great products are worthy of a higher pricetag, etc. That's secondary now, but I think this thing will run on iPhone 3.0 software.

Oh and it won't have a keyboard but full compatibility with Apple's Bluetooth keyboard. The iPhone may get that compatibility also in 3.0 but I'm not 100% convinced.

What else is coming in 3.0? Very hard to say but it's all tied into new hardware which should be here this summer. You'll be able to use it with your current device but you won't get the full effect. Right now, my bets are on:

MMS: I believe it's coming but as I've stated before, not typical boring old MMS. this MMS will work with the cloud in some unique way.

Video: definitely this time. The most popular things to do online today have to do with social media and video. Those flip Mineo cams that everyone loves are so popular and Apple will capitalize on that. Look for Apple's video offering to be basic -- like the still camera -- but support iLife in new and exciting ways that will link to sharing via the cloud.

Push: whatever it ends up being called, you'll be able to get IMs and tweets while you surf the web. Apple promised it in September and apparently they restarted the entire process from the ground up because it's still not here all these months later.

Better Bluetooth: finally compatibility with Bluetooth headphones.

Copy and paste: Apple's going to announce it in that smug way that makes all the journalists and bloggers ooooh and ahhhh with excitement but in the end it's exactly what we expected it to be. Drag on a word, tap, double tap to paste.

GPS: turn by turn, glorious sounding directions in several languages via VoiceOver. When your iPhone isn't getting you home it will be playing your tunes and calling out your songs over the iPod. The shuffle got it first but we are getting it next.

More? Yep. Much more. But that's my take now. I'd love to hear your thoughts and this and anything else I may have missed.
