Thats what I've been quoted so not paying that, could you direct me to where abouts I go to finding one like you did? Was it loose steering you had too and was there a big difference when you put this used one in?

I just scoured eBay for the best one I could find, i found a lot of 1 series racks to be the same as well. Mine did'nt have any play in but the seals exploded on me which was not fun, tried to get my original one refurbished but they condemned it.
You looked into getting yours refurbished? I found a place near Birmingham that could do it for £170ish

Another month gone by, no real issues other than replacing two vacuum lines £75 including a diagnostic. Am going to replace the low pressure fuel sensor next Friday though, £85 for the sensor is a bit steep but what can you do? Still could be worse

It's 'cost' me a set of 19's. But I guess that was choice, rather than requirement.

Had the 35i in to have the low pressure fuel sensor replaced today at a cost of £200, sensor was £85 although I suspect the garage would have paid less than that for it but am happy enough. I think this garage will be my go to place from now on, even though they aren't a bmw 'specialist' they are friendly, seem knowledgeable and I think not to expensive.
On the drive home the car felt smoother and the slight lumpyness on idle seems to have gone, although my drive home gave me no chance to 'test' that limp mode under hard acceleration has now been cured, I am sure I will get the opportunity tomorrow

Paid £400 for a set of spare wheels and decent winter tyres, £42 for a replacement angel eyes bulb, and now the limp home engine warning has beeped, a quick check reveals a vans code, will get that fixed when it goes in for the recall stuff.

8 months in, I was all pleased to have nothing to say on this thread, until the boost became a bit erratic and I noticed some odd part throttle behaviour. I thought vac pipes, I feared turbos (N54), a smoke test revealed a crack in the cam cover and the breather matrix becoming unstuck from it too. I was able to get the new cover at trade, but still just under £400 all in, which really grates my gears when there's so obviously a common flaw with it and it's no more than a plastic moulding with some bolts; but pleased to report it's solved all the issues and the car's never been so smooth to drive, must have started before I bought it.

I spent £285 in June on a diagnostic, replacement of boost pipework to turbos & a low pressure fuel sensor.
Car is running nicely now. I am considering buying a 4.8is X5 to take the dog out in so I've put the 35i back into the for sale section.
