Very nice, Hawk! I actually wanted to be an actuary but that thought came a little too late after I already finished school with a major in biology - I loved math with a passion. It also didn't help me too much when I read that the actuary is the #2 best job in the U.S. (for '04 I believe) behind the biologist. The pay is great too here in the U.S. with average starting salary upwards to a whopping $80,000 fresh out of college.

It's a lot of work post-university (college) to pass those exams though - they're an absolute B--CH! I've actually got half an exam left which I'm writing this fall. However, if biologist is ahead of actuary on the jobs list, then it sounds like you did ok!

I'd be surprised if the average salary out of college is that high ($80,000), although I'm sure there are the odd individuals who get that. DW Simpson, an actuarial recruiter, does a salary survey each year... http://dwsimpson.com/salary.html ... which suggests salaries out of college in the states are closer to $50K.

Hey, Hawk - 50k is still excellent for fresh out of college! That's as high as engineers! Some of the best benefits for the actuary position from U.S. News (publisher of the then-best list of jobs) mentioned excellent pay, excellent growth in rank/promotions/pay, autonomity, and low levels of stress.

It's funny the biologist is ranked #1 but in the field of biology it's extraordinarily vague - I think US News' depiction of their #1 job as a biologist is actually something on the lines of Jeff Corwin, The Croc Hunter, etc etc. I'm unfortunately veering towards medicinal research

I'm just stoked that you know what an actuary is! As you can imagine, it's awkward in various social settings when someone asks what you do, so you tell them, and they stare blankly back at you. Although, it's worse when they say "oh, that's like an accountant, right?". I'd rather someone just admit they have no idea! What we do is nothing like accounting.

If it makes you feel any better, you're the first medicinal researcher I've ever met! Not to mention the fact that your work actually goes towards helping people and potentially saving lives!
