OK...but why shiv suggests 10-40 for the single turbo engine?
''We highly recommend using a high quality zinc-enhanced synthetic engine oil (10w-40) such as Amsoil or Motul 300V.'' http://www.procedetuning.com/BMW/n54...-17/index.html |

I may switch to this (mobile 1 0W-40)...what type of mobile one do you use (wich variety of mobile 1 do you use?) I have been using 5W-30 from BMW. I also have a stage 2 Stett oil cooler w/180 degree thermostat so my oil is probably a lot cooler, would you guys suggest 0W-40 still?

+1, after 7,500miles on this oil, I have not once had a half engine light for a stock VANOS solenoid like I did with Mobil 1. German Castrol 0W30, and you can normally find a 5qt+filter deal for $32.99 @ Advance Autoparts or Autozone and but the 2 add'l qt's and still be under $45 for an oil change.

If you really need to know....
BITOG- Bob is the Oil Guy site - http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ Click on the Oil University on the right. *HIGHLY* recommended reading..
The W stands for the GRADE of oil, not the weight.. "synthetic oils have similar characteristics as mineral oils at operating temperatures. The synthetic oil will however be less honey – like at startup even though it has the same API / SAE rating. Yet the synthetic 10W-30 grade oil is based on a heavier 30 grade oil while the mineral based 10W-30 oil is based on a thinner 10 grade oil. They are both similar at operating temperatures yet the 30 grade based synthetic is actually less thick at startup and much less honey – like at low temperatures." I have 105k miles on the 335 and many oil changes usually around 7500 miles. My experience with these oils in the 335 and a very modded 2003 Cobra over the last 10 years.. Amsoil- Very good, GREAT power and throttle response; great engine temperatures, but made the engines noticeably more noisy. Redline- My current favorite, hands down. Excellent power and throttle response, little to no real turbo lag, superb engine temps (often 210-220 @ extended light freeway driving; typically 230 almost all the time). Did take longer to warm up than other oils (not sure if that's a bad thing). Engine was a little noisier than normal. Pennzoil Platinum- Absolute garbage. Noticeable power loss and seriously worse turbo lag until the car warmed up, then things were fine- until then the car had all the power of a fat, drunk cow. Power loss and turbo lag seemed to improve somewhat after several thousand miles (not sure that's a good thing?). Royal Purple- Used for 1 oil change, seems like M1 overall. Have read somewhat negative opinions from people doing used-oil analysis; not highly regarded on some forums, YMMV. Local specialty auto parts guy gives it a frowny-faced "eh..It's OK..but i'd go with Redline for the same price". Mobile 1- Nothing positive or negative; car ran fine; better than BMW's oils in throttle response and slightly lower average engine temps- my 3rd place pick behind Redline and Amsoil. BMW oil (Caster Oil). Just did this *recently, dumping a relatively fresh Redline batch. Wow.. NOTICEABLE turbo lag and syrupy throttle response until it warms up... but it seems to warm up quicker then other oils and oil temps seem to have the least fluctuation when warm. Not as annoying as the Pennzoil Platinum however. I never noticed this kind of power loss with BMW oil before; perhaps due to the high mileage or that the latest Procede tunes have such sharp throttle response that the effect is more noticeable now.. not sure. *(Injector(s) failed while out of town, flooding the engine with so much gas it actually hydro-locked when trying to start it- towed to dealer- changed oil as a precaution). 0w40 castrol edge sport is good for the 335i. Maybe even slightly better than mobil 1 and the standard castrol edge. Motul 8100 is also great stuff. All listed above are perfect for the n54. I stick with 0w40, but thats just my personal preference according to what ive heard/read. You cant go wrong with any of the listed ones as long as its changed regularly.

Rotella t6 and now available in 0w40 and 5w40. Awesome oil for ANY hard working/ high heat engine. Its real synthetic base stock, not a blend. Plus its cheap and available at walmart.

Rotella T6 on anything I've owned that's turbo, my favorite over the years for many reasons.

Using Amsoil 5w30 right now. Engine warms up pretty fast but the oil temps is usually at 240-250.
Anyone else recommend something else that will cool my oil temp more? Some friends suggested that Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w40 is good but will need a more often oil change at around 3500-4000 miles? Is that true? |
