Before replacing the alternator/regulator, I'd thoroughly check the IBS. This is what caused the alternator on my E91 to put out over 17 volts intermittently, and was only discovered after throwing two alternators at the problem.

Can't the IBS be disconnected to rule it out?

How would I check the IBS before changing the alternator? Definitely don't want to keep dumping unnecessary money into the car. $250 for a battery is painful enough but I knew what I was getting myself into when buying a bmw.

It's the intelligent battery sensor. I believe it's the big thing on top of your battery, and I've heard it can be disconnected by unplugging just one cable. Search the forum and you should find some info on it

The IBS is the black ground cable. I'm pretty sure that's what was replaced during the recall.

IIRC, the IBS was not part of the cable recall in 2013. Luckily, the intermittent problem with mine was discovered when the dealer's tech couldn't restart the car. This was the third time it was in the shop and since the IBS (which is contained in the cable) was replaced in 2011, and subsequently the OEM battery the following year, there have been no more electrical issues.

Thanks for the update man. Helps close the thread properly, and will help others in the future who have the same issues.

How do I go about getting the turbos replaced under warranty? I'm at 77,000 now so I'd love to get that done if possible.

You may be out by years. It's 8yr/82k.

You'd need a fault (30ff) or a waste gate rattle or both. The right dealer could hook you up
