Either by advertising products fitted to the car, your job and what could then potentially be inside, or even by showing your views on sports teams, politics, religion etc.
I'm not saying these things happen, but that I understand how insurers could claim it could. |

Any insurance company will try and worm there way out of paying any type of claim if the car has been modified in any way and this has not been disclosed when applying for the car insurance.
Hence the reason why I have disclosed all my mods and doing that again when I change the wheels, some of the cosmetic stuff wont effect your policy but its always good to let them know. |

Declaring my mods only cost me an additional £30. Lowered, engine & gearbox map, mishimoto intercooler & a K&N filter.
Always declare any mods performance or cosmetic as it's not worth the risk of having your insurance voided in the event of a claim, also if you drive a modded car & get pulled by police they can & do contact insurance company's to find out if any mods have been declared |

Spoke to my insurance company and they said there shouldn't be an increased premium but they would need to see a "report" from the garage of the modification. They couldn't really elaborate on what the report needs to say, but I gather they basically just need a report from the garage explaining what the modification is.
I asked if I would need to do something similar for my cosmetic mods, and they said yes and suggested I get the garage to also refer to the cosmetic mods in their report. This will probably be fine for the spoiler because the same garage installed it for me, but I'm not sure how they will "report" on the diffuser which I installed myself! |

It will basically be an engineers report, where the insurance company want someone to put their name to the work carried out, signing something saying it's been done to a professional standard. Sort of passing liability on to them if a claim was caused by something failing due to incorrect fitting etc.

That sounds about right, I rang them back and they said they basically want something in writing from the garage confirming what the modification is and that the car is still roadworthy with it.
My garage said they can provide this for the exhaust, but I'm also going to ask if they can do something similar for the spoiler and diffuser, even though they didn't install the diffuser. This really is a lot of hassle, I shudder to think what I'd have to do if I ever did any proper performance modifications to the car! |

Hi,
I did a few mods on mine; an OEM PE, new grills, engine remap and pedal set. I was worried that the insurance company would shaft me but it added £36 to the annual premium! Sigh of relief. You should definitely tell them, any risk of voiding your insurance is crazy. |
