Extremely modern D.I. (direct injection) engines like the N54, N55, and S55 engines are found in many BMW's today. Direct Injection has many benefits for fuel economy, and overall engine efficiency, it is a pretty sophisticated technology. There is one downside, and that is, the injectors are mounted so that they fire directly into the combustion chamber. Commonly, fuel is injected into the intake manifold, upstream of the intake valves. The effect of fuel, with detergents, spraying on the valves cleans them. On a direct injection engine, this process does not occur, and so it allows oil, from both the CCV system and turbocharger blow-by to build up in a "cake" on the intake valves, reducing efficiency and choking the engine of power. *think clogged up*. By 60-80,000 miles, it really causes rough running and a reduction of power and efficiency.

Luckily, a process has been developed to clean the intake valves, using a media blaster and softened walnut shell grits. Using an air powered gun, a technician can "blast" the closed intake valves clean with this media, thus restoring power back to the engine. It Is a slightly involved process, but worth every penny....

does the N52 usually require walnut blasting? I would assume no or at higher mileage due to no turbo.
