took my car to the dealer, apparently my turbos are fine but i have a leaky oil filter housing gasket and leaky valve cover gasket

You will see more smoke when you remove the main and secondary cats. This is normal as the cats don't mask or "dilute" the condensation smoke that you see. The best method to check if you're turbos are in fact on the bubble is to have a buddy follow you, punch the throttle and see if you see a blackish puff of smoke from the pipes.

i had the same issue but went away when i increased the wastegate position on the jb4 g5 ISO >50

maybe gives you a reason to get a JB4

had mine on 80 n it didnt make a difference on the smoke issue but did get rid of the rattle,put it back to 0 as my fuel economy went down with wg position 80.

make sure you guys check your valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets cuz those might be the problems if youre having oil consumption issues. Fixing those are a lot cheaper than getting new turbos and even cheaper if you DIY those

I have a leaky oilfilter housing, and it smokes looking a lot like a turbo seal fail?..

Can it be just the oilhouse filter giving that smoke, or ?..

If you have a leaky oil filter housing gasket, does it cause smoke out of the tail pipe?

I had slight smoke after my DP install. Thought it was leaking Turbo Seals... turned out to be leaking oil filter gasket. It was a $250 job. I could have done it myself for $40 and 2 hours but I hate messing with this engine. Anywho, after getting that fixed it's completely gone away... minus the white smoke on cold starts.

damn this thread is old haha. but I ended up getting my turbos replaced. I'm sure all those issues contributed to the smoke but the only thing that ended up removing the smoke was new turbos

Lmao, I was wondering the same thing going through this thread. Might need to replace headlight too if shifting becomes difficult.

Well white smoke can only be so many things. Most popular is obviously condensation which means nothing. White smoke can also be coolant burning (which I doubt it is in this case). OP said it smelled like oil and the smoke didn't become apparent untiil he went catless. My vote is the beginning stages of bad turbo seal(s).

Turbos may not fail, and may still boost just fine, but smoke usually means the seals are on their way out.

and nothing can be done about this, other than replace the turbos?..

is there no way leaky valves(or whatever) could lead to oil getting into the turbos making the blueish smoke?..

am im guessing increasing boost would increase the speed of the failing seals?

You could rebuild your stock turbos. But other than that, nope.

For peace of mind you could check the plugs.. if they look very black and "wet-like" then yes, could be valves or something internal. But I'd much rather have it be a bad turbo seal than having to tear apart half of the engine. I'm going through the same situation with my seals, it sucks (and is rather embarrassing sometimes considering you're in a BMW and most people will be like WTF?!). They have rebuild kits as mentioned above but I chose to find some low mileage used ones and just save up in the meantime for RB's or something and get them over the winter.
