Lets hope Ferrari can join Red Bull in fighting Mercedes for wins in 2021.
Surprised though that Ferrari haven't already adopted the "split" turbo design...I always thought there was a significant benefit in having the "compressing" aspect of the turbo as close to the inlets as possible.

We'll see first what complete team Merc has in place, it's getting late in the day.

it is like that by more traditional materials and "less squeezed" packages for easier spooling, lower end materials, less cost, comparing to F1..

main purpose was to decrease heat goes to into engine by Merc's split turbo design.. since there is a place more likely split turbo gave a better placing opportunity for the generator it increases efficiency as well..

compressor has to be in the back since exhaust piping goes towards back in a small area of engine compartment.. putting intake turbine in front gets rid of the engine heat and less heat means more power obviously.. and since there is less heat smaller intercoolers for better aero efficiency and better center of gravity as a bonus by split turbo and intercoolers..

the only thing im wondering is how they manage to keep the vibration stresses away from split part.. there is a longer shaft between turbo elements, its in the middle of the engine + track bumps, acceleration etc.. tiny tiny off center move can ruin the shaft easily..

im not sure if there wouldnt be electric generator Merc' would go this way.. but more surprisingly none of the engine manufacturers thought about this but Merc'.. great engineering move to step up..

I always assumed that other engine manufacturers had copied Mercs split turbo design years ago...but apparently not. Certainly as you note the thermal benefits are considerable but set against some quite complex design obstacles...not least the extra mass/inertia that a longer connecting shaft between the two turbo "halves" entails.

This is a great read on Mercedes.
I especially liked the part where they talk about presenting (and encouraging the belief that) the cars performance advantage being solely due to its engine performance to distract rivals from copying their chassis design...and therefore encourage other teams to continue copying Red Bulls higher rake design.
Only now I suspect (having seen racing points success using Mercs long wheel base design) will other teams look to re-evaluate their chassis design concept.

This is one of my all-time fav articles and shows that Mercedes F1 is the Master of Trolling on the planet and definitely adherents of Sun Tzu.

There are teams that talk smack and get that butt smacked on the track and those that do their talking on the track. Red Bull is the latter, Mercedes is the former.

Really hoping that McLaren can race at the front this year...a battle for wins between 3 or 4 teams would be awesome.

This is what I'm banking on.

I see McLaren, Aston Martin, Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes winning races this year.

This year may be as good as 2010!!!

We have 4 WDCs and 1 pretender on the grid with 2 of the WDCs in race winning cars.

This. May. Be. Epic.

I am hoping Renault can get in the mix on this too. I am not counting them out yet. Huge strides last year and if they can continue that progress through the off season we might have a 4-way battle for the #2 constructors spot (McLaren, Ferrari, RBR, Aston, Renault). I still think Merc is a lock for #1.
