That actually doesn't sound bad at all. At idle it sounds less than golden, but under acceleration it sounds remarkably like an I6. Actually I would go so far to say that it sounds like a throatier M54. Good job BMW!

This sounds just awesome and more classic inline BMW motor than does the N20. Looks like it'll be a runner as well. I hope they put it in a solid rear drive platform as well whatever else they might choose to do with it notwithstanding.

This is cool. I'd imagine with a tune these cars are going to be in the 240hp area with incredible mpgs

SOOOOO the question now becomes, will BMW release a 325i turbo 3 for the US market to compete with the lower end competitors at a lower price- something with like 200-215 hp, maybe accompanied by a 328i bump to 250-260? that would make a lot of sense to me.

Wasn't their rumours that this would go into the base MINI (or an engine other than the current I4) and the S and JCW would retain the I4?

This does indeed sound better than most 4-cylinder engines, the only notable exception I can think of being the Fiat 500 Abarth, which has a great exhaust note by any standard, but absolutely incredible by 4-cylinder standards. The R56 Mini Cooper S's engine isn't bad either, but that's less of a sporty aggressive note and more of a spunky, bubbly note that's entirely in character with the rest of the car and is kinda fun to go bombing around with.
In any case, I was highly skeptical when I clicked Play on the video, and I came away very impressed.
