However, I do have to admit that even though I am pretty deaf I use earplugs on any long "windows and top up" drive in my '16 Porsche Spyder. Otherwise, the road noise from the rear wheel wells drives me crazy. |

I am taking my ‘22 to the dealer tomorrow (for second time) to try and have this issue diagnosed and resolved. I couldn’t reproduce the sound consistently in August during a ride-along with the tech, so hoping now that it’s freezing in Chicago it will be easier to reproduce on demand. I am going to leave the car with them for a couple days.

In the meantime they’ve loaned me an m440i convertible. The oem exhaust sounds much better than my M240 but overall the driving experience is underwhelming. The mild hybrid is “ack.” My 5 yos are loving it though. Been driving around Chicago with the top down in 30 degree weather. #dadoftheyear |

Guys for some reason, I felt like it could be the fuel cap? I mean not the cap inside, the panel? Thinking of trying to tape it shut for a bit and try. It does move a bit and I assume when car goes over bumps it could make a sound. It’s also on the passenger side rear where the sound comes from?

I've been getting the noise you're all talking about, but the strange things is that mine is a UK car and my noise is coming from the passenger side - ie the opposite side to where you are all hearing it. Wonder if this is a clue??

Is your fuel cap on the passenger side?

Update time: SA contacted me and indicated the foreman and tech inspected the headliner, rear seats, and entire rear suspension without any success in identifying the source of the rattle. They’ve spent 7 hours in total over the last week. They may turn their attention to the bump stops now. This may wind up being a gremlin I need to live with as I want to limit the potential of introducing new rattles with all the removal and reattachment of panels. I give them credit for doing as much as they have thus far. More to come.

For those of us currently living with the noise, I found that if you code Comfort+ mode with BimmerCode, the noise is SIGNIFICANTLY reduced. So this has to be an issue with the shock absorbers no? I only hear the noise over very slight imperfections in the road, sounds like the noise comes when the shocks back out to full extension (rebound) but I could be wrong |

Could be the shocks, but could be something else that is loose that just rattles more when the shocks are set harder and the rebound rates are higher.

Finally got the car back today after a week with the techs. They brought in a second shop foreman and confirmed that the sound was there but still couldn’t isolate it. I think this is just something I’m going to have to live with until BMW figures this out and issues a TSB. Per the repair order they re-torqued all exhaust hanger bolts and rear suspension bolts, removed and re-installed the headliner, removed and re-installed the rear seats, and dismantled the trunk. Kudos to the dealership for trying, but no dice, and I don’t want push it further at risk or introducing new issues and burning what is. at the moment, a great relationship with the SA. Hopefully someone has luck with this!

Its insane, read this too. This is a X3 M40i. Such a prevalent issue. Granted it is in a different location for this..

It was not the exhaust. I see the cross link bar under the vehicle but it is no where near making contact with the exhaust. All exhaust mounts are good on mine.
While I was under there, I noticed the metal straps that hold up the gas tank (under the black plastic covers) make some noise when moving. Put some rubber strips between it for some isolation, let’s see if that helps at all |
