I've been saying on and off that it looks like we've got a bit of room next to the stock turbos on the N54 in the 335 despite what others have said (some of which have really wrenched on the car too). I stuck my head down there on my 335XI and, if I had removed some of the crap like heat shields, coolant tank and whatnot, it looks like I could prob stuff a first between the outermost part of the turbo and the car's frame rail. That's a good 3-4". It'll be interesting as we get more pictures etc of this setup how it fits in whatever application. BMW could do something odd with the cylinder head or just lean the engine over a few degrees if the single had a hard time fitting. Anyone hear about what make/model turbo this is? Compressor map etc?

Yea, but hitting max torque @1.2k rpm on single snail is pretty impressive. usually it takes higher RPMs to achieve max torque with that kind of a setup.

Add to that the fact that a 3.0L is blowing more exhaust gas (pre-spool). Basically, 1200 rpm on a 3L is like 1800 rpm on a 2L. (And the 3L is spinning a smaller turbo.) So yah, not surprised that it would manage full spool at 1200. 1) turbo is smaller (than an EVO or STI turbo, which use a big turbo to make up for a smaller engine) + 2) you have more exhaust gas (pre-spool) to get it spooled (since you have more liters than an EVO or STI, you can make more exhaust off-boost, so you can put more force on the turbo to get it spinning.) = 3) Max torque at low rpm. I don't expect it to be laggy either. But, they don't mention now long it takes to reach full spool when doing it at 1200 rpm. Why go backwards in performnce to a single turbo? the N54 has more torque, and would be just as good as an n55 for making power. I think BMW is pulling a marketing gimmick here with virtually identical engine with a small single because it is cheaper for them to produce...

Singles generally outperform duals.
It will just suffer more lag. But with such a large engine behind it, the lag will be negligible. Whatever HP/TQ the N55 is rated at, it is there by choice. It could be set 100 hp higher if they just felt like it. Keep in mind that the N55 single is MUCH larger than the N54 duals, so it will be more efficient, and will have higher maximum power potential. We don't have data on the N55 turbo. All we have is a picture, and in that picture it's helluva lot larger than the N54 singles. My previous post that called the N55 single 'small', is simply in comparison to the turbos on an STI or EVO (where the large turbo makes up for a small engine). And for that matter, I'm stating my expectation. -scheherazade |

I wonder what compressor/turbine combo they are using.
Something tells me it will run out of steam even earlier than the pea shooters you guys have now. |

I'm surprised nobody has thought about ripping a HPFP off an N55 and slapping it onto an N54. Seems like an obvious mod to me and it would probably help beef up the fuel system for the N54 for "big" power.

So we have a bigger single turbo than our twin smaller turbos with lower peak torque. I think we should reserve judgment until we get to know more about this turbo's efficiency range. Lower peak torque RPM and lower peak torque numbers says that it likely moves less air than our twin turbos do in aggregate. Basically until someone really pushes the envelope with the new turbos and fueling system we wont know what this car can do with basic bolt ons and EM upgrades. At least with an upgraded Valvetronic (from Vanos) means that tuners will have more parameters they can tweak to help produce more power.
