Will there be a 2020 Euro Alpine Trip?
Not sure. Have done 5 years worth now. The £/€ exchange rate is killing us Brits. However, i do have a rough route planned out, taking in Lake Garda, Venice, Lamborghini factory tour, San Marino, etc, so who knows. Or maybe it'll be North Coast 500 in Scotland, or Norway.

Looks like an epic trip! Reminded me of my Germany, Austria, and Switzerland trip. Great memories of the autobahn and Nurburgring. Loved my time there. Looking to go back soon!

Great trip. Too bad it didn't work out that we do it together. But maybe next time.
Now I really need to get my act together and post photos from my own trip...

What a trip. Lots of driving, lots of beer. Love It. In April I drove to Southern Germany (Garmisch), Fernpass through Austria to northern Lake Garda, on the western side down to Sirmione, to Modena for a visit at Ferrari Museum and Pagani, north again to Verona (so beautiful), back roads along Brenner to Kareer Pass and Cortina in the Dolomites (roads here need some serious paving like many roads in Italy), and up to Chiemsee in Bavaria. Great weather this april of 2019, and great company w my friend Kim driving his black beast 997 GT2.
However, if you find the Alps too crowded, try the N260 across the Pyrenees: From Andorra to Sevilla, this outstanding road is a hidden gem in Europe w almost no traffic (nor police), beautiful sceneries and fantastic pavement. Thanks for sharing! |

Andorra has been considered. But if i was going in that direction, i'd have to do the Atlas Mountains in Morocco as well

The loops through the passes. We often spend September in Europe and would love to see recommended touring routes through Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

I really recommend getting a large map of region, marking off all the passes, hotels you fancy staying at, and then formulating your own route. Some people like a lay in in the mornings, late breakfast, and to only drive for a few hours per day. Others, like me, up at the crack of dawn and on the road by 8am and happy to drive for 8 hours every day. One idea i'm toying with is to book a hotel for a few days, a hotel that is right in the middle of a few passes and really take my time. You also need to decide on the luxury you need. I've stayed in some erm, questionable "hotels". To be fair, those are quite rare. But you need to decide on what facilities are a must and which you can do without. Each road trip takes me around 3 months to plan, and even then i still get it wrong!

I appreciate what you are saying. I have motorcycle toured for the past 14 years and have recently sold the bike and replaced with a 135i that has already performed well on 1500 km. weekend trips. Bigs days on the road have given way to moderate days, with more photo ops, longer lunches and inpromptu 'let's try this road' deviations. The level of hotels has improved by way of necessity with my wife as co-pilot. I will do as you suggested mapping out the passes and go from there.

As above, i'd suggest getting a large map and marking off the passes and then start planning based on how many days you want to drive and how many miles you want to drive a day.

Wow! There really is nothing like the Swiss Alps.
As a fellow road-tripper, I've enjoyed your journals. You clearly like the Alps, and return trips. Have you considered going new directions? Prague? Poland? Denmark into Sweden and more?
