I've heard that replacing the driver's side engine mount with an upgraded part from the 335is can help mitigate this problem. Is this true?

Just an update, my dealer called me today and said the serp belt basically just shredded up, but all of the pullies are fine so they put on a new belt.

No charge because I have the extended maintenance plan in addition to CPO. Im still concerned this was from motor mount issue so I await an answer still!

Great news was covered and no further damage. How many miles on car? Can you ask the SA which it was covered under? Pretty sure the CPO and BMW ext warranties don't cover belts. And don't recall the belt being listed in the manual for items covered under the Maintenance plan.

Also is this engine mount and/or pully issues specific to one model or all E9x's?

I am hoping that a class action lawsuit will come from this issue and I will be reimburse for the labor I paid for.

This is wrong and horrible for BMW to do this. They should own up to there mistake.
get the parts from them and DIY some how.

It is a 2007 w/53k miles. It was covered under the extended maintenance plan which DOES include belts. It was not covered under CPO which does not cover belts and other maintenance items.

This car is a freakin beta release ... and we have to pay for the patches to fix our cars.

Stinks , they will only pay if enough people make shit like hell for them.

Lets say , just for fun , I was loaded with cash and loved my car and wanted my car to have all the weak parts replaced with updates.

How long would that list be for a 2007 335i AT ?
HP fuel pump failing
LP fuel pump failing
Waterpump (tendencies to die)
Vanos solenoids (newer updated ones are now in use instead of the original ones)
Turbos (wastegate issues)
front sub frame
engine mounts
......
add more

I wouldn't say this is a common problem, but I have seen it and fixed one with this issue a few years back. The issue is that the power steering pulley contacts the subframe, which damages the pulley. The belt sheds or comes off as a result. If you don't stop right away, belt can get between the crank pulley and block. I've seen where the belt can damage the front crank seal and cause a nasty oil leak, FWIW. If the power steering pulley is fully intact, this isn't your problem. Lots of other things can cause belt issues.

Anyway, here's some info I "found":

E82, E88 (1 Series) with N54 engine up to 4/08

E90, E92, E93 (3 Series) with N54 engine up to 4/08 except xi models

SITUATION
The models listed above utilize a single serpentine drive belt for the power steering pump, alternator, and air conditioner compressor. During normal driving, the front engine mounts allow the engine to move slightly on the front axle carrier. However, under extreme conditions, such as driving at high rates of speed over curbs or speed bumps, the engine movement can result in the serpentine belt or power steering pump pulley contacting the front engine carrier. If this occurs, the belt and/or pump pulley could be damaged.

PROCEDURE
When diagnosing a complaint related to a broken drive belt or a drive belt which has come off the pulleys, it is important to carefully examine the power steering pump pulley for any signs of damage.

If there is no damage to the pulley, continue with normal troubleshooting.

If the pulley is chipped or cracked, then the pulley and the belt must be replaced.

In cases where the pulley has been damaged, the front axle carrier should be examined for any signs of contact in the area below the power steering pump pulley.

If the axle carrier has any sign of contact, then the carrier must be replaced. For E90, E92, and E93 vehicles produced up to 3/19/07 which require replacement of the front axle carrier, the left side engine support (P/N 22 11 6 760 317) must also be installed.

The following sections of the Repair Manual should be referenced, depending on the repair(s) which are to be performed:

Repair Instruction RA 32 41 100 "Removing and installing/replacing belt pulley on vane pump for power steering"

Repair Instruction RA 31 11 001 "Replacing front axle carrier"

Repair Instruction RA 22 11 110 "Replace left engine support arm (N54)"

FWIW, this just happened to me.
You can drive the car nearly an hour (headlights on) on the battery solo with no alternator. As soon as the battery light came on I checked it out and removed the mangled pieces of the belt first.

failure on 2009+

Has this happened to any higher mileage 2009s or 2010? I would think under normal conditions belts should last 60k+ miles.

If you aren't in a rush grab this tool.
http://compare.ebay.com/like/3806017...Types&var=sbar

It can be found online for $40-50. It'll save alot of frustration and time.

As you can see in the pictures, it's a pain in the ass to get to the tensioner. I made it work with a 90 degree torx wrench but it put alot of pressure on the air intake tube and I had to remove that radiator hose as well which makes a mess.
Got the tool and it's a breeeeeeze.
With the tool, at most, you have to remove the fan which is about a 3 minute job.

Hey guys I just had my belt broke too car is a 09 e92 with 44k miles luckily my sa said it would be covered under cpo since they found oil leak from housing gasket which caused the belt to lubricate over time and break off however my car has been down for 3 weeks now since one of the part they need is on back order

so basically I'm happy they are taking care of it however the part that is on backorder is called some type of locktite sealant that you need to put on the screw when installing these belts so what I'm most Frustrated about is the fact that the sealant is a god damn universal item that could be found easily anywhere so for them to have my car in their shop for 3 weeks and not even have the sealant yet is outrageous!!!

I don't want to file any complains because if I do I'm afraid they might think of me as one of those 20 year old ignorant person and not fix other issues they might have been caused from oil leak so sorry for the long write but this is how my situation is going about chime in if you care to
Thanks

Sketchy.
Unless its on back order , it doesn't take 3 weeks.
I ordered a part direct from BMW Germany and it took about a week and a half at most to get here.

Not Xi?

The service advisory said "except Xi". Anybody with an Xi have this problem?

I know its really sketchy but like I mentioned have no choice but to patiently wait since they are covering it under warranty but its really frustrating how long it takes them just to get the part in their shop that cost like $5-7!! And get the repairs going and give me back my damn car

Mine was the power steering pump breaking a bolt off in the oil pan that kept eating belts.
