It's fine - you aren't likely to damage the pad as long as the calipers retract nicely and the end of the tool spins freely. It should take VERY little force to do it when everything is A-OK. I've been able to do it with my bare hands on some cars.

But for sure, don't make a habit of using the new pads to do it.
