I would rather use stock than go back to BL. Search around and you can find people talking about them catching fire. See a bunch on the many N54 FB groups as well.

You can run them plug and play for stock dwell or use MHD to increase the dwell.

Even at stock dwell the b58 coils have been shown to deliver more energy.

I plan to run them with stock dwell until I see misfires.

Those applications have factory controllers and also might not be pushed as hard in those applications.

I think it is preference. The BL coils have proven to work very well for a lot of people. I was also interested in them before going this route.

I decided on the B58 coils and went this way with just a simple plate and a coil that is similar but better than stock. There is no extra circuitry to add into the mix, and the tune isn't really required.

I like circuitry too, I am an computer engineer so it is fun but it is also something that can hypotentically go wrong when put in an engine bay (especially here in Phoenix). I will have to post up my custom M3 EDC shock controllers that I am about to install in another thread.

For coils I just wanted a simple upgrade without lots of extra connectors, etc.

I might be down to buy a set! Been looking at coil upgrades and was torn between Eldor and the PR kit but I may go this route instead. Nice work.

Coil boots are here...

I got the plates back from powdercoat. I will use a flatter black with any future runs, i am not a big fan of the gloss...

One has a bare spot where the hanger contacted it.

For these plates do people care if they are coated or would they just put them on bare? Powdercoat will add a bit to the cost.

PM Sent - Looks like a perfect ignition solution for me. Running PI - Full E85, throttle tip past 1/4 and cylinder 5 misfires. Gonna do the injector at same time (running brand new Eldor coils and index 12 injectors) and hope the two things fix it.

I think $225 regular price seems about right to start.

I may offer a discount of perhaps 10% for making the coil spring modification DIY.

I will post pictures on how to modify the spring. I figured out how to do it reliably and it isn't complex but I don't think I want to do hundreds of them myself.


I do want to make these affordable. I also have to see how cheaply I can ship these, shipping might or might not be included.

B58 replacement boot spring mod

Here is how the rubber replacement boots are modified to fit the B58 coil with fat bunny plate on an N54.


The replacement boot/spring combo that I use needs some simple DIY modificaitons.

The springs start out symetric, and we need to modify one side to fit the B58 coil.

This is a simple enough fix, I cut the top 4-5 coils off from one end it and then form it to a slight taper. I have started to just just a little bit more than this picture so that there is less work to form a tapered tip on the spring by bending the top coil inward and compressing it down with pliers.

The spring is too short when used with a B58 coil.

The CRITICAL part of this that ONLY the newly formed top portion is changed. The bottom portion of the spring that contacts the spark plug MOST NOT be modified. The spring must move freely on the bottom and there is a fixed 13.5mm portion of the boot that the spring works in. If the bottom part of the spring is changed at all then it will bind up and not work the way it should.

I find that 120-125mm long is about the right length. I go to 125mm on the initial stretch just to be safe. Slowly stretch it out to match what is shown and keep the top coils pretty even.

Here is a picture of the spring original spring vs the modified one with a B58 coil with the boot installed. The stock b58 top spring is also shown for comparison.

To install the boot insert the small end of the spring at the sprark plug end of the boot. push it in with your fingers and then finish the job with a spark plug or phillips screwdriver. It should go in pretty easy, I don't recommend pulling the last bit through from the other side, it is better to push it in.

The spring can stick out just past the top of the boot when retracted. It should be even or a little beyond the boot to get good contact on both sides. This one was about 4-5mm which is good for when the spring was just stretched (they may have a some memory from and shrink back slightly just after being stretched).

It should extend an additional ~13mm when extended, this one was ~18mm and the spring should move freely in the boot.

When installed the spark plug will compress the spring about 8mm to ensure that it has a good contact. This can be measured by putting the boot on the car without the coil.

I didn't intend for this thread to become a debate between if the R8 coils or the BMW B58 coils are better. It was a DIY thread on how I used the B58 coils specifically.

If there is a desire to have a debate thread on which is better that is fine and good but it should really be a dedicated thread.

This thread is thread about how I used the B58 coils. I think it may even make sense to create a classifieds thread to continue the discussion for people that expressed interest in buying a kit.

I am pretty sure that you were the one that brought up the R8 coils in the first place.

This thread was never intended to be about the R8 coils. The debate on what is better is really off topic. This is just what I did which got some interest from others who were interested in doing the same.

The B58 coils have a nice diy aspect to them and use all BMW parts, that may appeal to some.

Jumping into a discussion just to say "My stuff is better than yours" rarely gets a great reception...

Dumb question, but it looks like the ignition coil basically has a boot integrated into it. The B58 coil bottom portion is for B58.

If I have Eldor coils on my N54 and want to go to B58 ignition coils, can I just pull the 'boot' portion of my Eldor coil for N54 and replace it onto the B58 ignition coil?

Then all I need is the adaptor plate to mount the B58 coil and then the wiring adaptor to interface the N54 plug in type to the B58 plug in type?

I hope this makes sense. Essentially I am asking if I can cannibalize the boot portion of my N54 Eldors onto the bottom of B58 ignition coils.

The boots don't come off from the n54/s55 style coils (well except for the short bottom part). The coil takes up much of the length of the unit rather than being all in the top part.

This is a similar style pencil coil diagram (from denso):



The B58 coil is different where the entire boot comes off (see pictures from earlier posts). The internals look more like this one (not a b58 coil but similar style from wikipedia):



And a more descriptive diagram (although this one seems to have the coil turned 90 degrees compared to the one that is sawwed in half):



In our case the b58 boot comes off which is fortuante so we can use a longer one.

So basicaly, No you can't use anything from your stock style coils.
