In step 27 the shows you holding that shaft circular thing. What is it and what is called?

step 27 shows the pilot bearing shaft. It is normally part of the flywheel and keeps the input shaft of the gearbox from floating around at high engine RPM.

Majority of the time an engine will have a spigot bush or bearing and the pilot shaft will be part of the gearbox input shaft, however bmw have done it differently here and the input shaft actually has a hollow area for the pilot shaft to locate. (shown in the picture above)

Nickthe pic of the pilot bearing shaft that entire unit does not fit on to the new spec flywheel correct? You must separate the shaft itself from the circular piece the press the shaft into the new flywheel? Does the shaft need to go all the way on or bottom out on the new flywheel? or are you suppose to measure how much it was protruding on the oem flywheel and and install it on the new one at the same height?

No it is not. Use realoem.com as a reference. The XI have a different trans.

Press F2 to enter the FA or Vehicle Order of the car there you will see a menu with chassis again choose E89 now it will ask if the vin is correct, it should auto populate with your vin if yes then hit okay and it will take you to a FA screen with all the options your car as on it. Remove S205A AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION by clicking it and hitting delete key.
50. Press F6 or the back button, then hit F4 for ECU and select CAS and then okay
51. F2 to change job, from the pop uip window select FA_WRITE. and press okay
52. Verify all the information is correct (Right module, and jobname is FA_WRITE) then hit F3 to execute the job should be pretty quick
53. After the write has been complete press F1 to change ecu and select "FRM" go ahead and verify module and jobname once more and hit F3 to Execute the job on the FRM (Fussraum Module) (Footwell module)
54. After coding has ended. Exit NCS Expert and proceed to start Car!
Thanks for posting! I am about to tackle this on my xi.

Did you ever get cruise control to work?

I noticed that in your steps, you changed the VO, but you never defaulted the coding. The coding should be defaulted in the DME, DSC, and Kombi modules at the very least. Ideally, you should default the coding in the entire car. Lack of doing this is probably why cruise control does not work. It's probably also the reason why you could not start the car. Does pressing the brake in, instead of the clutch, start the car? (With cas pins not jumped)


Also, the VO is redundantly stored in the FRM so the VO should be written to the FRM as well.

Yea I did that as well. The actual problem is that there are 2 wires that go from the cas module to the clutch switch module and from the cas to the DME. I just haven't gotten to it. Hasn't really been an issue hahaha.

So you didn't wire the 4 wires for the clutch switch module? Just the DME wire?

I did wire them, but I ended up having issues and just wanted to get the car running so I jumped the wires on the CAS so the clutch switch would read pressed and it starts the car without having to have the clutch pressed in, but no cruise control. I've been busy with other things and haven't gone back to try and resolve that yet.

This is a bit off topic but I'm having a conflict.
I have a 2006 330i Manual amd we need to change the brainbox/DME/ECU (whatever it's called). Now the local mechanics say we must get a ECU from a manual 330i. Is that compulsory?
Can't we just get a ECU for 2006 330i (whether from an auto) then code it to manual if need be?

Hi,

So I've gotten all the hardware done (waiting for the drive shaft to come back from the shop), but I'm wondering about this:

"29. Be sure to remove all the automatic connectors from the trans and lift from the top of the car out the automatic tranmission loom. You will need two connectors on the automatic harness plugged in as well as the ground for the loom, because when you go to program the car the DSC module relays on that ground to function. You will need to just tuck in part of the harness in the ECU box like I did. Just cut off the plastic retainer for the cable and wrap it around. reference for 2 connectors and ground needed to be plugge din from auto loom http://imgur.com/a/oMnaz"

I looked at the picture, but I'm not really clear what you mean... Are you saying that I just need to wrap up the harness because the connections at the engine bay need to be plugged in?

This is a race car, so I don't plan to install the clutch wiring harness and don't care about the backup lights. I was going to jump #3 & #41 on the CAS and call it a day.

Total hours of say ranged between 8-15. Really depends on number of people. Lift vs no lift. I did it on a lift. I had to figure out exactly what coding needed to be done. Once that was figured out it went pretty smooth. Money wise look between 2-3k depending on clutch/flywheel setup and whether you can obtain a donar car for cheaper parts.

Yes this is true, they revered back to the pilot bearing being within the flywheel on the N55 motor.

I ended up plugging those two cables, which were from the original AT transmission harness because they carried grounds for the DSC module. But later I found out you can wire in those wires if you wanted to just check out wiring diagrams online to find out how. And by tuck them away I meant connect them and ground them to the same spot as the manual harness and place them within the ecubox with only the wiring so they wrap up and are easily stored if you go that method.

plugged them back into the two sockets that were for the automatic trans. The have the same color as the plugs themselves. All color coded.
