BMW needs to spell out in detail what they mean by the following:

"Based on the individual service history of the vehicle, the action will entail replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump and/or a software update."

They say only 40,000 out of 130,000 will require new pumps. I had my HPFP replaced with the 881 version when they "announced" their first voluntary recall.

My warranty just expired and I took it in just days before expiration and then again on my last day of the warranty period and had the High Pressure Pipe and the Inlet pipe replaced since I had a major fuel leak. I now think the dealership improperly installed my HPFP which then led to the leak. I complained several times that I noticed strong fuel smells at times and was told each time not to worry because these cars "run rich".

I would like to see BMW deal with this issue once and for all, but I am not holding my breath.

My thoughts too. As stated in their letter, BMW can still do a "software upgrade" to vehicles with older pumps (which primes the pump before starting) and call it fixed. I hope they actually replace all pumps to the "fixed" one and if they want software upgrades to keep it running reliably, I'm all for it. But that clause gives them a way out or replacing all pumps to the new type which means we may not see anything different from what they are already doing today.

^+100000

So they've re-announced what has already been available but this time with media attention. Woohoo...

It would have been nice for their announcement to be along the lines of "we are dedicating R&D toward the engeneering of a new flaw free HPFP that will be voluntarily replaced in all effected vehicles."

Well wait a minute now..sure some exaggeration doesn't hurt.

But you have to remember, most owner of this vehicle don't know the difference between a valve stem on the tire and the valve stem in the engine.

Most don't know they even have a valve stem!!

Nonetheless, what a HPFP is...all they know is they put gas in the car, they press start, put it in drive, and it goes...press brake, it stops....seriously, people are typically not mechanically inclined and are really clueless how a vehicle operates.

Did the lawyers coach them some? Sure, but if they really felt freaked out...that is how they felt...can't take that from them.

Gheez..my wife is a prime example of that....haha...

Sounds like BMW's same old HPFP "fix" with a brand new marketing/media spin...

I'm curious if they (BMW) are basing the recalls strictly off of known "history" or does BMW actually know a difference b/w certain cars and why those are experiencing the problems?

As luck has it my car is scheduled for service tomorrow, I'll be sure to ask my SA how dealers are being instructed to interpret the "recall" and post results

jesus christ, everyone needs to stop freaking out about the recall. shit happens, things break. get over it. they are great cars and this doesnt change that. and the people abc news interviewed dont know shit about the cars, they just wanted attention on the news. my old car went into limp mode, it really wasnt that unsafe, i could still travel at speed

Just to confirm some of the speculation -

Just spoke to my SA...he has very little info at this point.

Its an inspection/service...meaning that you get a free inspection and depending on what is found you may or may not get a replacement. At this point, there is no info on what would constitute findings to warrant replacement. So yeah, sound like more of the same BS, just nicely written to make it appear as if they are doing something. When in fact, the protocol has not changed.
