Some of you guys act like DSC Off = uncontrollable death machine in modern day turbo BMW

I'd venture to guess most of you never owned powerful RWD cars that weren't equipped with traction control or even ABS.

I drive my modded M235 around in DSC Off 50% of the time. I haven't died or gotten in myself in a situation where I've lost complete control of the car. I've induced lots of understeer, oversteer, etc., but never to the point that I've lost control. In the snow, DSC Off is usually mandatory or else the traction control systems will limit power/throttle to the point that you can't even move.

My buddy believed the same thing back in 2010 while we were riding in his highly tuned 08 E92 335. Still recall vividly as we spun into a ditch and a tree branch was just inches from my face.

Only turned mine off once in the E93. It scared the shit out of me. In the IS350, I turned it off once, dry asphalt, on a hot day; I suddenly found myself sideways in the middle of intersection with a cloud of white smoke blinding everyone behind me. I'm too old for this shit these days.

I drive with it on most of the time but will turn it off when I'm by myself and away from traffic/pedestrians on occasion. I grew up driving 400-500hp RWD cars with no stability control, traction control or other nannies......and the tires certainly didn't have the traction that they do now. Not being able to drive the car hard without electronic aids is a wee bit sad to me. I also drove my supercharged V8 F type without the DCS on and I'm still here.

I'm usually cruising in euro MDM mode. the regular DSC is too intrusive for my liking.


everything off when Im fully paying attention and wanting to drive it how its meant to be driven.

I use DSC OFF mode when on track, or when I leave from getting my car washed since the tires are slippery and I like to do a little baby drift as I pull away. Pretty much all other times I have DSC active.

My thoughts exactly, almost more hassle to turn it off every time.

I leave mine on all the time. Only time it’s off is on track or during heavy snow when traction cuts off. Every once in a while I turn on DTC if I’m on empty backroads.

I've driven several high hp street/drag cars without any type of traction control and never had any issues.....but none of them had a "fly by wire" throttle body like the 335i.

I have a really hard time trying to "feel" the traction limits when it's fly by wire........and with the turbos building boost fast, it compounds the problem. It's really hard trying to feather the throttle when you are not directly connected to the throttle body/carb.

I leave the DSC on 95% of the time.....I've never had any issues with it slowing me down.

I always turn it off .. I hold that button as I pull out of the garage every time.

It's AWD .. I think we're ok. If I wanted the throttle cut I will cut it.

AWD doesn't = unlimited traction.

Please keep your DSC on people. Turn it off at the track.

I drove an E30 318i with no DSC. It would fish tail, oversteered but haven't killed me yet. You just have to be careful. I think we're spoiled with all the electronic nannies.
There will come a day when we can't drive in the rain because the wipers don't turn on by themselves.

And how much wheel spin you get from the max torque barely of idle E30 318..., not...

I grow up without DSC, and I really haven't had it intervened but with modern no lag high torque turbo engine I would personally play on the safer side

I'm kind of shocked how many people think that the car is uncontrollable without DSC.

People keep commenting about how someone who turns it off must be driving, but if you NEED DSC on (as in it's activating), what the heck are YOU doing on a normal drive?

I can't imagine owning a fun rwd car and never getting on it hard enough to shake the back end out even a little.

Thanks for the advice dad but I'll keep it off. It's hard to believe we all survived the 80s and 90s without these life saving computer modules.

The only time i _would use it is the first couple laps around a new track.Side note I do have great tires / suspension and [I hate posting this] I do have a lot of seat time logged especially with instructors. This car is very predictable and has tons of static grip. It's a real ask to get anywhere near that on a public road, it'd be totally asinine of me to begin with to be in a situation where dsc makes a difference. I drive like an old man usually. With the stock suspension and runflats yeah you could find that point without trying so hard.

In my case day to day all dsc does is cut the throttle on good upshifts and cause confusion. The car feels freed up with it off the wheels spin freely as they should. Ymmv

It'd be asinine of you to get near triggering stability control on a public road, but day to day you trigger it? Asinine indeed.

Yes, we made it through a time when there weren't so many safety systems on cars, but many didn't. The safety systems are there for when something unexpected happens. I've no doubt you can drive a car, but sometimes sh1t happens, irrespective of driving skill.

I agree that you can make positive changes to the safety of your car by upgrading suspension and tyres, etc. But I cannot see any defensible argument that it's safer with stability control off, and safety is all that matters on a public road.
