I like the nose on the G42.

When I was moving on from my F30 I was between an F87 and a G42. Both were roughly the same price and I had a tough choice to make.

I can't stand the rear of the F87. It just looks feminine to me, the way the rear number is just like a fat wide butt without much definition. It's really striking because you see the front of the car which looks incredible, but then you go around back and it looks so much like a standard 230i. Like CodeSlinger is saying, bulbous is the exact word I'd use to describe the rear of the F87, especially beneath the trunk like. It's like a wraparound inner tube to my eye.

I ended up getting the G42.

Then, like you, I hated the rear of the G87. I had the opportunity to put the first deposit down for a G87 at my dealer in April of 2022 and because I hated the rear and they wanted $10k over MSRP I rejected that offer.

Fast forward to June, I finally got a chance to see a G87 in person. The car looked incredible, I just wasn't completely in love with the rear bumper on the Brooklyn Gray car I got to see. However, and this is big, I didn't hate it. I hated it in all the photos I had seen, but I actually didn't mind it in person, and I actually liked the whole package significantly more than the F87, which we had a couple of with us at this event.

Fast forward another 30 days and I bought a black G87. Dark colors win on this car. It's unfortunate that black sapphire is the only dark color offered right now. This car in mineral gray, tanzanite blue, dravit gray, thunder night metallic, hell even Portimao blue would be incredible.

Now with the way my car is set up, I wouldnt even trade it for an F87 M2 CS. I'm completely in love with it.

And this is coming from someone who hated this car at first.

To go back to my original point, aesthetics are completely subjective. That being said, I would still never buy an M3 or M4 with the pig nose.

In terms of bulbous design... that was always the word I used in describing what I didn't like about the F87 rear end, not nearly enough definition and aggressiveness.

I would probably have preferred if the rear bumper was slightly less blocky than it is but I vastly prefer the chiseled rear end of the G87.

To me the G looks like it was rear ended and not repaired.

Lol classic, I respond to a post saying that there is "nothing similar between the G87 and F87 rear end designs" with specific design elements that are shared. Response: "hurr durr G87 luk ugly".

If anything the F87 rear would be much easier to back into a wall and have no significant damage beside making the flat ass even flatter

Id rather have it flat than look like a 13 year old with a pep boys fetish designed it.

Hopefully they fix it in the refreshes. I don't have much hope for that however. I think this new design style is going to be a big win for Porsche.

Dear F87 owners:

We get it. You prefer your cars.
How are they doing? Working well? Any tunes done lately? Tire swaps?

I think a lot of those helpful discussions happen daily in the F87 forums. Let us know! Cheers

So you'll at least get the perspective on a build that's tuned?

I feel that BMW is sending a message. If you want your M product to do back flips and be gorgeous you gotta pay 120k plus. Otherwise you get what we give you.

Kicking this thread FWIW. I had a F87 and now G87. I went through a different car, so no direct trade. Both manuals.

I liked my F87 a lot, but never was impressed too much by the driving feel. Didn't like that I couldn't adjust the suspension. There was a lack of adjustability. I liked the look, but was not found of the sides, there is something weird about the curve to the rear fender, hard to explain, something doesn't quite look right. I liked the interior because it reminded me of my F80. Liked that it was simple, while understanding it was dated, looked ancient compared to even my X3M which I bought new in 2020.

For the G87 I didn't like the look when first pictures started to appear, you guys remember these first crappy phone pictures? and I was stuck on that for a while and crossed it off my list. The G87 looked so much better in person, it's weird. Now that I see a F87 in person, it looks dated, kind of boring.

For the driving feel, I'm not a racer or fancy driving feel snob. I just know the G87 feels more stable and planted to me than the F87. It reminds my of my E92 comp more than my F87 did. I like the interior design a lot better in the G87, the huge screen actually doesn't bother me at all, it's cool, but I don't give a @#$#$ about all these apps, I'd be as happy with the previous idrive system. The manual trans is acceptable but not awesome feel, but not a problem either, usual manual BMW. Bucket seats are awesome.

If I had the choice, would I trade directly F87 to G87? maybe not, because I would be probably be justifying myself that the G87 was not better. Probably until I saw one G87 in person and tried one at my local dealership.

Anyway, just ranting, not sure why anyone would read this, but wanted to share some thoughts as an owner of both cars.
