I paid £1080 for my 18 year old daughter on a 10 plate Fiesta 1.25 Edge this time last year. This was fully comprehensive in her name with my wife and myself as named drivers. We sold her Fiesta last October when she started University and transfered my wife's Mini Cooper Auto to her policy, it cost me an extra £180 for the remaning 5 months. The policy is with Diamond, I paid in full for her, but they wanted an additional £400 on the premium, if she had chosen the pay monthly option!

The policy is up for renewal in about 4 weeks, she is now 19 and will have 2 years NCB, I am dreading the renewal figure!

My son is about to turn 16, I have already warned him off that I will not be buying him a car! Happy to pay for driving lessons, but the cost of a car and insurance at 17, as a young male, is frankly prohibitive.

EDIT, just ran a quote though Confused.com - renewal for my daughter came in at a respectable £624, with Bell. Policy in her name with my wife as main driver, they share the car, but my wife uses it for work.

That's worth looking into I'd say. I would imagine there's some clause about young or inexperienced drivers but worth a look nonetheless. I was in my early 20's but it was a free insurance offer from Citroen and through Direct Line that allowed me to finally break free of being on my dad's insurance. A 1.0 litre Citroen AX with a years free insurance and a full NCD if I renewed with Direct Line after the first year.

From experience with my lad:

Reliable. Economical. Safe. Bespoilered. Twin large exhausts. Body kit.
All electrics. Climate. "Style". Yoof image. All as standard.

Previous shape Civic Sport.
Weedy but torquey 1.6 110bhp engine. Over 40mpg (with 18 year old leadfoot driving). Insurance group 5.
There are still a few one-owner ones around. In any case choose carefully, they are either thrashed/bent or well cared for.

Car insurance, just a rip off!

And it's getting worse, no idea how in 5years time anyone under 21 will be able to afford the cost of insurance..

Will be just like the housing situation- young people will be reliant upon getting a helping financial hand!

I paid nearly 1800 for my insurance, and my partner who's insured on her own car as a provisional license holder is a grand for the year, will probably double when she passes her test

weird

I just called Admiral ,we have a multicar policy and to be added as driver on my E92 325d a extra £645 , My wifes Merc 250d sport estate is £490 peanuts and can earn his own NCD,Is this the way forward for a year or so .

The quote was while he held a provisonal licence have i missed something ?.I am thinking they consider he is under supervision and when he is cut loose will be ragging the arse off it and want crazy money when I change the policy to a Full licence.

Best I call again and check the issues above. Weird 120 bhp fiesta £6500 and a 200bhp Merc/BMW a tenth of the price .

The guy was saying it was unusual a young driver having a clean /blemish free licence was he just being thick he hasnt been driving due to his age .

He is a new driver and is going to make mistakes. 200bhp and rwd will add to those mistakes.

I'm sure you don't want him bashing your car.

If he crashed would that not affect the entire policy and ruin your NCB too?

If he does not claim and earns NCB through being a named driver, will other insurance companies accept that as proof of NCB or will that only be accepted by Admiral?

I know that those accelerated NCB bonus polices are not honoured by other companies.

It's the car which has pumped up the insurance, you need a group 1 or 2 car and that will still be £1000+ to insure.

I was lucky, my dad was in the trade, I have a Golf GTI 16v at 18, mind you that was 20 years ago................ Mind you my mate also had one and he paid £2500 third party - shows how times have changed!

My son turned 18 and passed his test last year, so we gave him the wifes old 1997 Toyota Starlet 1.3 16v as a first car, nice basic no frills first car, worth about £500 at most, he modified it tastefully (japanese spec OEM toyota bits) and he only use the car two days a week (weekends) as college was walking distance - so was named driver on my wifes policy, anyhow, insurance was £1953.80 a year fully comp NCB protected for my wife, on Co-Op insurance.. 6 months into driving.. the car met its death via a lamppost.. Insurance is insane for an 18 year old male, especially as I live in an F rated postcode. But we're going to do the young drivers insurance with the tracker + box and have him on his own policy where he can be main driver on a MK4 Golf 1.4 (safe car) for just £1600 (compared to what we were paying on the toyota, thats a good deal).. if you don't mind your child having a box fitted in their car then its not a bad way for getting them a decent insurance quote - atleast for a year whilst they build NCB, then switch them over to a normal policy.

Paul,

Have a look into this... http://www.youngmarmalade.co.uk/

It's basically contract hire including insurance, and your boy gets a brand new car!

Update - Just looked into it and it seems more pcp now... used to be CH!

Still worth looking into though

Unless I'm missing something that is very very expensive.

Clicking on a basic 1.0 Corsa they want nearly £12,000, but the perk is you get nearly £2000 cash back.

If you leave a £300 deposit and do average mileage of 12,000 per year the HP cost is nearly £300 per month or £260 with final payment of £2500 on PCP before insurance is added. I'm not putting details in for a quote.

You can get that car new for nearly half that price so how can it be worthwhile?

The £2000 cash back might help you get over the insurance costs for the first year but then you are stuck with a vastly overpriced car for 4 years.

Unless I've picked it up wrong that's how it reads to me

That's just the norm these days I'm afraid. I turn 22 on Wednesday but my insurance hs significantly dropped over the years. I've had 5 different cars, and there seems to be no logic in how they price the quotes.

2000 citron saxo vtr £1800 (£600 on provisional)
2002 Astra coupe se2 Bertone £1500
2008 Astra 1.9 cdti 3dr xp with CRTD box 213bhp £1300
2008 BMW e92 coupe 320 £1200
2011 Mini Cooper S £600

That's all with admiral insurance and my mother as a named driver. Admiral/Bell/elephant are all the same company but usually offer totally different quotes.

I would just try as many places as possible, and don't underestimate how much advanced driving lessons can reduce car insurance for youngsters. Often between 25-30% according to admiral!

Sadly, 17 year old males are just not what insurance companies want to take their chances on.

I can drive a Porsche cayman, 335i or an M3 all for less than What I paid for my 2002 Astra yet some would argue I'm no more mature than back then!!. My mrs who has just passed her test and is also 21 can drive the mini cooper s for ~£350 a year. It's criminal....it really is!!

But not cheaper than the multi-million pound payout for crippling somebody. It's not just about the value of the car

Insurance is a pain in the backside, but it's all based on statistics and young male drivers ARE a high risk.
