I waited 345 days for my M3. It was absolutely grueling and my wife was convinced that I'd lost my mind, but it was so worth it for one of my bucket list cars. Placed the order on March 1st of 2022, and FINALLY took delivery on February 9th, 2023. I still remember the chilly morning of February 8th, when I was scheduled to fly down to Greenville, SC to pick up the car. I wish I could re-live that weekend over and over again.

^Picked it up on my birthday

Very nice example indeed - what a wait though - I love that your wife thought you might lose it - thats how I would be too, just love new cars and new driving experiences.

Yeah....but you now have the nicest looking M3 on the planet. Worth the wait, I'd say!

After 23 years in the Lexus RX series, my wife decided she wanted to switch to BMW (she loved the tech in my M550) and also wanted to go smaller. So, she told me she wanted an X3 M40.

We went on the BMWUSA custom build site, specc'd it to her exact wants, and boom: less than 3 months later it arrived. This was in '21 during Covid.
So, not too long at all.

Now, she wants an X5 and our dealer is telling us there will be little inventory on BMW lots for the next few months and allocations for a custom build are getting harder to come by. So will be interesting to see how long this next one takes....

PS Anyone hear of the inventory shortage and why this could be? I know several model lines are being refreshed (like the X5) so maybe it's just the gap between models?

I have a feeling it has to do with the LCI. When we ordered our X7 LCI last year, while we didn't have too long of a wait to get an allocation, it was still a bit longer and trickier to get one as compared to the X5 we ordered back in 2019. So my guess is since the X5 is now going through an LCI, that may point to the reason for allocation troubles. Still shouldn't be too bad.

I'm pretty sure I did go crazy I made an entire post just talking about everything that happened during my 6 month wait for an allocation.

My most agonizing wait for something I didn't have to pedal or push was my 1st motorcycle; a Honda 50.

The local motorcycle shop had to order it, then assemble it when it arrived. I'll never forget the day they
called and said I could pick it up. I was a senior in high school. I hitched a ride to the motorcycle shop with
a fellow classmate who worked there, the late great Gene Romero and eventual National Grand Champion
motorcycle racer.

Loved that little motorcycle!

Great story - those honda 50’s are so cool - what year was yours and did you keep it?

Update to my own post; We went to the dealership this past weekend and my wife HATED the interior of the new '24 X5s; most of the controls/buttons are missing! She just didn't want to hunt and peck on a giant screen to access the audio, then climate, etc. The advisor said "Everyone is now using "Hey BMW" voice commands to control those things and my wife just shook her head. She plays music pretty loud and couldn't imagine having to yell "Hey BMW" all the damn time. Turns out, there is a lot of discussion about this elsewhere in these forums... He didn't have any 23s in stock either.

So anyhoo - we custom configured a '23 LCI X3 M40i with all options, - we were told it will arrive in July. But for what its' worth....the dealer had NO X3s of any kind on his lot, no used ones either and said it would be a few months before he got stock back. He claims that BMW is in the process of ramping up production...

For what it's worth, I have the X7 LCI with iDrive8 (which the X5 LCI is similar to interior-wise), and I was also at first disappointed with the lack of buttons. But 6 months into it I realize the automation is a significant step forward to the point where I'm rarely if ever pecking through the screen at all. It's much improved from the automation found in previous iDrives (and I'm not talking simply about voice commands). It sets everything from the heated seats/steering wheel/armrests to heating/ac based on preset conditions, and it does a remarkable job of it to where I've never felt the need to tinker with it. And those settings are tied to the overall temperature setting, which is front and center on the screen at all times, so you don't have to go through any menus at all if you want to adjust the temperature up or down (and if you don't want to use voice commands).

Now having used the system for the last 6 months, jumping back into the previous iDrive7 system, it feels outdated and definitely not as advanced.

I know none of this matters, but just figured I'd share my experience. My wife who drives the X7 primarily also loves it now, and we owned an X5 previously with the old system.

Great feedback. One thing to know about my wife....she HATES change - it's probably the only reason she has kept me around for nearly 30 years. So, I have no doubt it would probably be awesome and an improvement, but not so much for my wife.

Can't argue with that

I traded it in on a Honda 160 a couple of years later.

During the time I owned the 50, I upgraded it to 55cc. That extra 5cc was noticeable. Simple bolt-on parts.

About a week after I traded in the 50 I saw it go by my dad's store. I was very dismayed to see that the little
twerp riding it had cut off the rear fender, just behind the seat, plus cut off the forward part of the front fender.
A hatchet job. He taped the tail light to the seat. I could've decked him!

Stole this photo from the web. This is exactly what my little 1965 Honda 50 looked like:

6-7 month wait for a MB E Class wagon for my wife. Ordered in Nov. On boat now, to be delivered later this month. Too bad BMW won't send 5 series wagons here. Not everybody likes SUVs.
