Plastic/foam top of strut-

Is it knocking when you drive along. This is a bung to stop the shock knocking. If it's not knocking I would say it's still doing its job.

No knocking-I was told its also to stop crap getting inside?

Not sure bout the rears, I know the fronts have dust covers which do that job.
