Try running the car with the MAF unplugged. Have you tried to run live data logging with the engine running to see what it all going on?

Only one way to find out, but my Z would run on a base map with the MAF unhooked.

As far as I know it will cause the engine to run on a default factory map. Won't be as efficient as normal and will store a fault since the MAF is disconnected. But if there is a major problem with the MAF, this is usually the easiest way to test it.

So the issue has been resolved!
Come to find out it was the oil filter housing which was broken. The stem part of it was broken. As in missing. Now the part that really makes it frustrating is that this issue started within 12 hours of getting an oil change at the shop I go to in RI, Premier Automotive. They denied having any part in this piece being broken. And after a long arguement they basically told me I was out of luck....and $1300. They even had the balls to tell me that this issue presented itself after I had an oil change because the new oil didn't have the sediment which was taking up the space of the missing piece... Overall a very frustrating experience. This entire experience was entirely caused by their negligence. At least my car is back to running fine and I have new vanos solenoids and a new Valvetronic eccentric shaft sensor. Moral of the story; don't be lazy and just do the work yourself... |

I'm having very very similar issues as you were, right down to the exact sounds etc...
My car only goes into "limp" mode / Intake doesn't kick in after extended periods of idling IE traffic. What is this piece you were talking about that resolved the problem? I'd like to check mine? Thanks |

I had to get a new oil filter housing. They broke part of it off when they did an oil change. I did receive two low engine oil pressure warnings when this was going on. Hopefully this piece being missing over the last month or so didn't damage my engine...
There's a picture of the stem on this thread. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=471425 |

Thank goodness That you got that fix. One shop fixed Muy oil filter gasket and messed up My bmw performance intake. Instead of removing the carbon fiber housing by first removing the air intake filter housing, he removed the carbin fiber air housing by pulling on it and making the passage way for the air to travel bigger which caused an Air leak. This made my intake not work properly.
So i had to bend the plastic back to it original shape so the the passage way was air tight and i made a huge difference as to How my performance intake performed |
