Aftermarket Headunit

Hello everybody, I’m about to replace the OEM business radio in my E91 320D with an Apine CDA-9854R + steering wheel remote control interface KCE-BMW. My car has no iDrive, no DVD, no CD Changer ,no Hi-Fi System and no Logic 7: only Business Radio and 6 speakers.
I have read previous messages and I saw that someone has already made this replacement so I know that I could have some problem.
I have read that a constant 12volts line for the headunit is not prewired and that there is no ignition lead in the power supply plug for the headunit.
How did you overcome these problems?
Thanks in advance for you reply and suggestion.

There is also a company called digistar...they replace/mimic all systems and have them keep their functionality...have it in my escalade, orginally they told they would have to mount the orginal headunit(stock) under a seat to keep all the options but then they were able to get a digistar in and took it out completely...I am certain they make this for BMW....talk to a local BMW shop, not the dealer, and youll learn alot about whats made aftermarket for BMW

When I swapped out my head unit to add 3 dvd montors & a player pls a video amp, audio amp & twin 10" subs they disconnected my volume controls on my steering wheel 7 aeverthing related to the stero but they told me for another $400 Canadian they could buy and install a device which reconnects everthing again. At the time I did not bother because I had 3 remote controls anyway so id did not seem to matter & everything else on the wheel still worked. Also I was not sure if I would restore it to it's original form to sell & keep or sell the audio/video equipment separately. If I restore it to the original system they can just hook it back up.

I'm currently looking into producing a bezel for a double-din for the E90/92. I'd like to have it above the climate controls though. See the attached photoshop.
Can someone check if there's enough depth for a double-din above the climate controls?

Anyone that can help me out, with some pics preferably, will get a 50% discount when I start selling them.

Hi Rich,

I will pull out the head unit and heater controls and take some nice big pics. I am staying OEM but happy to help.

Alpine touch screen would be better than double din anyway I reckon.

If you want to go after market check out crutchfield.com they provide masterdata sheets, harnesses, etc so you can do the install yourself. Last I check there is no aftermarket system that will incorporate the steering wheels controls. They have some nice touch screen dvd nav packages.

Hey Rich I remember seeing some of your work on e46fantics and mp3car, your stuff looks clean and very oem. Anyway I'm in NJ also so if you need a car to test fit or something let me know, I might consider a carpc in the future. Also for how much can a carpc be made for these days?

As for the stock steering wheel controls and stuff, what if you wire the stock radio into the glovebox and leave it in aux mode, that way you still have steering wheel volume controls and you can just run a wire from the carpc to the aux input in the arm rest compartment.

aftermarket isn't too difficult

when i did my friends 335i this past summer i used a soundgate adapter to integrate the factory steering whel controls into the new after market alpine flod out touch screen that i installed. it is a can bus piece that isn't cheap, but works pretty well. they make different adapters for different radio manufacturers, the alpine adapter plugged right into the rear of the new radio.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...rglass+project

this was what i did. if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

I just took it apart, there is loads of room, plenty to get a double din unit in there.

I will take it apart again in the daylight or in the shop so I can get some decent lights on it, the flash kept flaring out the picture.

Hi All,
I am very much interested in the mounting bracket seen in the picture posted by Tierfreund (the one with the single din "decker" on it). I checked bmw parts but cannot find it. Tierfreunf or anybody please assist.

Stopped making that around 5 years ago when they stopped offering the Becker single din nav head unit.

Hi Usmarine, the Garmin holder is a custom mount done by the local BMW dealer here in Singapore for all cars without the iDrive screen. It is actually integrated with a power supply.( i.e it charges when its plug in). I believe they got Garmin to do it for them. I will take more pics for reference tomorrow.

Glad to see I'm not just a shitty installer. Your dash kit looks as abysmal as mine. That Metra dash kit fits no better than completely pathetic. Very disappointed
