MJ80, first time on here. Did you end up getting your valves done on the coast?

Right. I need to get mine done at some stage, 130k and lately idle is getting a bit rougher than it should. Might be heading down south before Christmas so might get it done then. If not, thinking of asking my mechanic (who I used to do some business with) to buy a walnut blaster and I will try and drum up a few people to support him, ie at least get their wb done with them.

I'll let you know if he gets one.

Brisbane BMW have a walnut blaster and they know what to do. I'd recommend going there than being a guinea pig at an indy shop.

Mmmmm, I think Brisbane wanted around a grand (don't quote me). Don't feel like getting raped. The indy shop are very experienced so don't have issues re workmanship. Anyway, all good. Let us know what Brisbane quote you.

For anyone curious in future, Brisbane BMW wanted $1050 for the walnut blast.

Iv booked in with my Indy Eurotec and he seems like the real deal, he doesn't have a blaster but is going to manually clean them by hand, for less than BMW anyway. Ill be sure to get some before and after pics.

Cheers

Garage List
I had mine done at Advan at 75,000kms, was quite a lot of build up as shown in the photo below. I still can't believe sea foam could remove that.
I waited around and watched most of the process and they did clean up very well with complete removal of the deposits.

I think there was a noticeable difference in smoothness and power but also the engine sound was a lot nicer. Though my car being stock is still a bit slow top end. I think on tuned cars where air flow is greater it would make more of a difference.

The whole job probably took 4 hours or so and not a lot of effort from the mechanic given the walnuts do the job.

Advan charged $495 which is good value as far as prices go but it is still good money for them given that is an hourly rate of over $100 per hour and the equipment doesn't really cost much. I think any more is taking the p!&&! I did get another quote from another local BMW specialist for $750 or more depending on time. I've seen US prices as low as $300US which seems about right.

It is surprising , however, pleasing to read that Brisbane BMW is now doing walnut blasting. At the beginning of the year, I approached Brisbane BMW about walnut blasting and they knew nothing about it but were willing to clean the ports in my engine by hand for in excess of $1k. I tried BMW Motorline and they could do the cleaning by hand for $900. I tried a few other privately run shops around Brisbane but had no success. I decide to DIY and bought some pistol barrel cleaning brushes, a Supercheap syringe and Carby Cleaner Fluid and cleaned the ports myself. It cost less than $100 and a day of my time to complete the job to my satisfaction.

Yep $495 is fantastic value for you but not good business for us it should cost $780.00 and it will be one day.
We are doing the special price for the Forum guys at lest until the end of this year.
This is a maintenance item and will need doing at some stage of ownership don't miss the deal, book now.

If you're in Brisbane, RenCal motors can do the valve cleaning for you. The head mechanic personally owns a modified 135i and they service a large range of euros.

I haven't needed to do this yet but, for future reference, I enquired with Mike at Prestige & Performance in Coorparoo when I was there and he said that he cleans by hand and quoted $650.

No I didn't as I think it would have cost me another $100 and Advan said they had done it before.

I don't think you would be getting more than 5% difference unless it starts to affect valve seating and movement.
