I also thought DPF's were standard only on the twin turbo diesels. The other diesels are just mobile chimneys working overtime !! But being serious about it, it may make sense for them all to have DPF, becuase the exhaust on a E92 320d is no longer angulated to the road.

All six cylinder diesels have had DPFs for sime time. As for the four cylinder cars, when the 520d was introduced that had one fitted as standard. The 1 series all got them from the facelifted models introduced earlier this year and now to finish the line up all 177BHP e9x models also have them. And the giveaway is the the straight exhaust trim/s.

Chris

Not sure if they all have it, but i have seen 2 E92 320d's (both belong to colleagues) which have straight tailpipes. As far as i know, you cant have straight tailpipes unless a DPF is installed.

I've just checked the uk spec of a e90 318d, it has a DPF. Looks like BMW dont want to bend their exhausts anymore.

Interesting... so is the DPF actually visible - is it located at the end of the pipe (or pipes)?

I dont think they are easily visible. Whether they are installed before the catalytic converter or after, may be someone else would like to comment?

The particle filter appears to be located in the exhaust as in the link below. (Page 19)

Good PDF document Helen... do you have a link for the equivalent petrol version

Seriously, as a lot of my driving is urban, maybe a diesel with a DPF just isn't suited to me.

Petrol Gordon - is that the inefficient fossil fuel, formed when dinosaurs ruled the planet.

You've maybe got a point though if you do quite a bit of urban driving. What an excuse though to go for a blast - 'sorry love, I need to clear out me filter, it's a bit clogged' Think I'll try that one.

Drivers who drive mainly in urban areas are most at risk of their EPF clogging up and their car having to make regular trips to their local dealer. In the case of some drivers this has meant visiting their dealer once every six weeks or so to have the filter unblocked as their driving occurs predominantly in traffic at low speed.

According to manufacturer guidelines, unless an EPF-equipped diesel engine is operated at 50mph for at least 20 minutes, or covers 50 miles at motorway speeds at least once every couple of weeks, there is an extreme risk of the EPF clogging up.

If you know your car is going to spend most of its time in urban areas at low speed, then it’s worth avoiding a car with an EPF.
jwbmw - this text is oddly enough the same text that my lease company issues. I'm not going to name them (just in case they read here!)

No not at the end of the pipes. The non-DPF's have the exhausts pointing down to stop you getting a black patch on your garage wall. There is no problem in this respect with the DPF cars and therefore they can revert to standard styling. The early E60 530d's (53 reg and some 04) did not have a dpf so an unbadged one is easy to spot. As soon as they released the 525d with a standard DPF the tail pipes went straight and this was rolled out to the 530d along with the cosmetic changes. BMW are now doing the same with the 3 series

I know there are some people with non DPF who have sawed their exhaust and added a straight pipe. It looks better with straight pipe - not sure if its a good idea environmentally and for rear end body work - similar to black patch garage wall mentioned by jw.
