Also dont forge the older 320D engine had the weeker turbo , the LCI introduced a new turbo which helped the issue. Also swirl flaps have been an issue on early 320Ds best be looking at newer models. You can always take out a basic 3rd party cover to cover yourself

Pretty sure theres a member on here with the older engine with standard turbo around the 170k mark
So possibly could be down to service intervals. Keep oil changes at 10k intervals and keep that breather filter clean / renewed and should be all good (hopefully) I am on 91k and my turbo's still good Yet again on the newer engine (n47) there are people also with monsterous mileages and no timing chain issues. Its just pot luck really i would say. Theres no method in the madness. My old car i had (fabia vrs) apparently had a weak troublesome turbo. I had 3 over the years (2 remapped) and didnt have any issues. I think any issues with certain cars get extenuated Hopefully you get a good one whatever you go for But id second the 3l 6cyl idea if 50mpg isnt that important and you'd be happy with 40mpg |

I too had a Mk1 VRS and it was mapped from new and I did 60k before selling with zero issues. This N47 was produced in huge volumes by the look of the models it has been used on, so although there may have been a 'bad batch' for want of a better description, I'm not worried in the slightest about mine. |

turbos definetly hit and miss had a mk1 seat leon tdi 115 and that let go of its turbo at 45k
If engine has been looked after it will run and run. My e90 I did 60k in it and engine never missed a beat and this was with 30k done under performance pack. Problem is you never know how its been looked after when buying second hand. Though at least full dealer service is always a good indication
